AFN vote on $47.8B child welfare reform deal doesn't pass after lengthy debate
First Nations chiefs have voted to reject a landmark $47.8-billion child welfare reform deal, reached in July with the Canadian government.
At a special chiefs assembly in Calgary hosted by the Assembly of First Nations, 267 out of 414 chiefs voted against a resolution in support of the deal after a lengthy debate that at points was emotionally charged as they argued either for or against it.
City of Chestermere searching for wreath layer for Remembrance Day ceremony
Remembrance Day is coming up on November 11 and that means towns and cities are starting to plan their special ceremonies for the day.
Staff with the City of Chestermere's Remembrance Day Committee have put out a call to the public for a Silver Cross representative to lay the Silver Cross Mother Wreath at the city's ceremony.
"This individual will represent all mothers who have lost a child in the line of service," wrote the city in a Facebook post.
Strathmore to send money to Wheatland Housing capital reserve
Strathmore Town Council has approved sending money to create a capital reserve fund for the Wheatland Housing Management Body.
WHMB sent Strathmore a request for funding on June 28, claiming that municipalities under the body are legally obligated to pay expenses under the Alberta Housing Act. A proposed response to the letter was discussed at Wednesday's (Oct. 16) council meeting.

Strathmore Town Council listened to a report discussing the 2024 Citizen Satisfaction Survey.
During a meeting on Wednesday (Oct. 16), results were shared about the quality of life of Strathmore residents.
A total of 3946 households were invited to take part in the survey. According to the report, 1,491 responses were tallied.
The survey was done by Framework Analytics Inc., a Calgary-based company.
Canadian Grain Commission dipping into surplus to keep fees steady
The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) is going to be reaching into its surplus for the first time in a while in order to cover its cost.
That comes as grain volumes are falling for Canada, and the commission needs more funds to keep up with their costs.

Alberta government claims new Calgary cancer centre "most advanced in the world"
A new cancer centre in Calgary is one of "the most advanced cancer centres in the world", according to the Alberta government.
The Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre will be opening service to patients on October 28. The province claims that this is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Alberta's history, with a total cost of $1.4 billion.
Eight Calgary friends win $1 million lotto prize
Eight Calgarians have won $1 million as part of the Lotto 6/49.
Catherine Forsyth, Barbara Stromquist, Joanne Deaver, Laurel Gordon-Cooper, Shirley Eagle, Susan Cahill, Wendy DeMontigny, and Wendy Merriam joined in as a group to win the money.
The women have been friends since they were kids.
“We started as a parent group and now we’re also a grandparent group,” says Forsyth.
Forsyth mentioned the women started a lottery subscription with a friend 10 years ago because they didn't want to go in every week to buy and check tickets.
Strathmore Spartans defeat division leaders in first home win
The Strathmore Spartans won their first home game of the season last week.
The high school football team played a game in town against the Bowness Trojans on October 10. The bout ended with a 26-17 victory for the Spartans.
Head coach Danny Warrack said the Trojans are at the top of Division Two in the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association.
"It was great to see. We had three offensive touchdowns," said Warrack. "We also made two field goals, and one was 45 yards."
