Strathmore man discusses love of miniature figure painting

Cody Miller is an avid fan of all things miniature figure painting.

Miller says he's been painting for over eight years and got into the hobby when he was out of work at the time.

He says he played Dungeons and Dragons for a while and added that people can buy the generic figures, but he ended up finding unpainted ones of the characters he was playing.

"I started by watching some YouTube videos, kind of learning from there." 

Turkey production has rebounded

While there are many ways to celebrate Thanksgiving, many people will have enjoyed sitting down to a nice juicy turkey.

Thanksgiving and Christmas are the two biggest seasons for turkey consumption,  but over the last few years, the industry has launched a campaign to broaden that reach.

Chair of the Turkey Farmers of Canada  Darren Ference says more and more people are now eating whole turkeys or turkey parts throughout the year.

Strathmore farmer recaps harvest season

With temperatures reaching into the minuses overnight, harvest season has been winding down over the last few weeks.

James Agnew, a local producer with Mullen Farms, spoke about this year's harvest.

"We grow wheat, barley, oats, and canola, and cow-calf commercial herd," said Agnew. "We seed in the first part of May and harvest in September."

According to Agnew, there were a few setbacks throughout the season, including the extreme heat over the summer.

How the old Strathmore RCMP station has changed over the years

Strathmore's old RCMP station still stands to this day.

The building, which was used by the RCMP between 1961 and 1995, is located on Glendale Street. The old station is visible while driving on Highway 1.

Back then it was used by the True North Society before being taken over by Step One Housing, which provides affordable housing for those with mental illnesses.

"We work closely with landlords in Strathmore, and we've been in the building for about 18 years, give or take," said John Bland, board chair with Step One.

Five fun things to do in Strathmore and area during the long weekend (Oct. 11-14)

Many people will be gobbling down some turkey during the Thanksgiving long weekend.

However, there are still several fun events to enjoy during some much-needed downtime.

Poetry Café: A special poetry café event will be held at the Strathmore Municipal Library on Friday at 7 p.m. Staff say teens and young adults will perform during the event. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Over 100 farmers enjoy local BBQ at Harvest Dinner

The Strathmore Legion was filled with local farmers as they enjoyed a bountiful meal of local barbecue while talking about the harvest season.

The event took place on Thursday (Oct. 10) and was presented by 104.5 More Country and was emceed by morning show host Keesyn Glawson. 

"It's a fun event. It's good to catch up with everybody because we've all been busy over the last two months," said Dane Hilton, who works with Hilton Ventures. "It's a nice chance to unwind and see how everybody did."

Boo bash for kids and cabaret for adults: Fright Night returns for Halloween

Fright Night returns to Strathmore on Friday (October 25), starting at 4 p.m.

Kim Bodeux, events manager for the Strathmore Ag Society shares what we will see during the event.

"This year at Fright Night, we are going to have a kid's boo bash party so a big Halloween dance for the kids, and then on Saturday night, we're going to have an adult cabaret-style bash. Something different for us, but just something that we thought would be fun."

Gleichen RCMP officer charged for perjury, breach of trust

An officer with Gleichen RCMP has been charged with perjury and breach of trust.

According to a police news release, RCMP began investigating Constable Anthony Jacobs in October of 2023 for his conduct while on duty.

The 40-year-old officer has been suspended with pay and was released from custody on an undertaking. According to police, he has been working as a member of the RCMP for nine years.

He has a court date at the Siksika Nation Court of Justice on December 12.

The conduct that led to the charges was not released. 

College volleyball exhibition game coming to Strathmore

An exhibition game between two college volleyball teams is happening in Strathmore on Friday (Oct. 11).

The game is between the Olds College Broncos and the Medicine Hat College Rattlers, and the game will take place at Strathmore High School. The bout is set to start at 7 p.m.

"We are very fortunate to have the Olds team come early and train with our men's volleyball program," said Jessica St. Goddard, a teacher at Strathmore High.

A dinner will be hosted following the school day and before the start of the game.
