More Canadians from Pool B at the Calgary Stampede are going to Championship Sunday

Yesterday the top 3 in the Pool B aggregate qualified for Championship Sunday including some Albertans and fellow Canadians.

Big Valley's Zeke Thurston is in great shape heading into Championship Sunday as he looks for another championship buckle after placing first in the aggregate in Pool B.

Kendal Pierson from Wardlaw, Alberta also just made the Breakaway Roping finals as she finished third in the aggregate.

Pool C also has some key local competitors to keep your eyes on over the next three days.

"He was the best," residents mourn the loss of Strathmore's Lyle Vass

Strathmore residents are mourning the loss of Lyle Vass, who died following a car crash earlier this month.

The crash was on July 5 at Highway 9 and involved a Ford Mustang and a Dodge 2500 truck. According to Airdrie RCMP, Vass was the driver of the Mustang.

Following the news of his death, car enthusiast groups and auto body shops took to social media to speak about the impact that Vass had on their lives.

One of those groups was Federal County Customs, with owner Steve Maclean first meeting Vass in 2018.

The chuckwagon races at the Calgary Stampede are heating up as the temperature cools down.

Chanse Vigen continues to dominate this year and has never won the Championship at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

Vigen took the top time of the night on a somewhat slower track due to some rainfall last night. He also had a one-second penalty, but it didn't hurt his overall time.

High River's Jason Glass is the defending champion, and although he came in second place last night, he's still sitting in 7th place in the aggregate.

Canada to 'align' with U.S. airport screening rules as TSA drops shoes-off policy

Ottawa says it will work to align its flight security regulations with those in the U.S. after Washington dropped a rule that required passengers to remove their shoes during security screenings.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced Tuesday that passengers at American airports no longer need to remove their shoes because officials have found other ways to keep travellers safe.

Canada does not require passengers flying domestically or to non-U.S. destinations to take off their shoes for screening, unless a security officer decides it's necessary.

Wisconsin and Minnesota Republicans call on Canada to curb wildfire smoke

Six Republican lawmakers have sent a letter to Canada's ambassador calling for action on the wildfires sending smoke billowing across the international border into their states.

In a Tuesday letter to Ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman, representatives Tom Tiffany, Brad Finstad, Tom Emmer, Michelle Fischbach, Glenn Grothman and Pete Stauber of Wisconsin and Minnesota said their constituents are coping with suffocating smoke from Canadian wildfires.

Alberta golf course fight involving ex-NHLer Tarnasky prompts investigation

Red Deer Minor Hockey says it is conducting an internal investigation after a video surfaced showing one of its coaches, former NHL player Nick Tarnasky, involved in a fight at a golf course.

The incident took place recently at Alberta Springs Golf Resort, just outside Red Deer.

Local 10-year-old author chases his dreams and meets his hero

A local author has added his first book to the Chestermere Public Library.

Ten-year-old Amarion Henry published Amarion's Routine for Success and donated a copy to the library in June. 

The book has also been sold internationally in France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Australia, Malaysia, and the Caribbean. 

"I want to inspire kids to get better at whatever sport they want in life, and to have the proper routine and good habits that I've learned throughout my basketball journey," said Amarion. 

Alberta has highest measles cases per capita in North America as summer travel gets underway

Alberta has the most measles cases in North America on a per-capita basis, worrying experts who say summer events could push case counts even higher. 

The province’s former chief medical officers of health Dr. Mark Joffe says that’s twice the rate of confirmed cases in Ontario.

Ontario has been deemed Canada's epicentre of the outbreak in absolute case numbers, reporting 1,910 confirmed infections since its outbreak began in October, but with a population three times the size as Alberta.

Rocky View County helps clean up through mobile recycling station

A mobile recycling station will be coming to Rocky View County in the coming months.

On Wednesday (July 9), the county announced the return of its annual Ag Recycling Roundups, which offer a convenient way to dispose of agricultural and household materials.

"Bring your recyclable items, including plastic twine, grain bags, tires, wire, lick tubs, electronics, batteries, household hazardous waste (HHW), paint, used oil and filters, and unused pesticides," wrote the county through a social media post.
