Two people, including nine-year-old girl, dead after Calgary house fire

Two people, including a nine-year-old girl, are dead following an early morning house fire east of the Calgary airport.

The second victim, a man in his 50s, was found deceased inside the home, while the girl was sent to hospital but did not survive.

Fire spokeswoman Carole Henke says emergency crews called to the Taradale neighbourhood were met by roaring flames bursting from a two-storey home, threatening other nearby structures.

Maple leaf pride is on full display for Canada Day

Canadian flags were handed out to Strathmore residents in preparation for Canada Day.

Several volunteers handed out 200 flags outside of the Strathmore Legion on Thursday (June 26) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to honour Canadian veterans. 

People passing by could accept a flag, and cars also stopping at the intersection received them. 

The legion was also accepting food donations for veterans. This annual event has been running for over four years.

Langdon playground extends closure

The Langdon Park Playground will remain closed until next week.

Construction began on June 16 to replace the park's current gravel with new, safety-approved material. The work was expected to finish on Wednesday (June 25).

However, due to the recent rainfall in the area, construction will be delayed until next week.

"We apologize for the inconvenience and will provide updates as the work progresses," wrote the Langdon Community Association.

A specific day for when the playground will be open again was not given.

Chestermere asks residents for input on social programs

The City of Chestermere is asking residents to take its Social Wellbeing Survey.

The survey, which launched earlier this year, is a part of the city's Social Wellbeing Framework Project.

"The Chestermere Social Wellbeing Framework will guide how we design and deliver social programs and services," wrote the city. "Share your ideas and help us create a more inclusive, supportive Chestermere for everyone."

The survey takes around 10 minutes to complete and is available in several languages, including English, Hindi, Arabic, and Punjabi.

No evidence federal election was affected by foreign interference, commissioner says

Canada's elections commissioner said Wednesday she has no evidence to suggest the federal election result in April was affected by foreign interference, disinformation or voter intimidation — even though the volume of complaints about the campaign shot way up.

In a preliminary report, Commissioner Caroline Simard said her office received more than 16,000 complaints about the spring campaign that ended on April 28 — seven times the number of complaints received in the 2019 and 2021 elections.

Senator Patrick Brazeau collapses in chamber, staff say he appears to be recovering

Sen. Patrick Brazeau is said to be recovering after collapsing on the Senate floor on Wednesday in the midst of debate on the federal government's major projects bill.

Brazeau, 50, rose to speak shortly after 4 p.m. before falling over sideways onto the floor.

A Senate spokesman says Brazeau appears to be recovering following an examination by paramedics.

Dueling markets prepare for Canada Day in Strathmore

There will be two markets open in Strathmore on Canada Day (July 1).

At 10 a.m., the Strathmore Farmers Market will kick off at the south end parking lot in Kinsmen Park. This is the opposite end of the park where the market usually takes place.

The Strathmore Farmers Market will run until 5 p.m.

On the other side of the park will be Main Street Market alongside over 50 local vendors. The north end market will also feature activities, food trucks, and live music.

Alberta panel member says ask Premier Smith about idea to cut aid to some newcomers

A key member of Alberta's new panel fighting federal overreach says Canada's immigration system needs fixing, but couldn't comment on the panel considering an idea to cut supports for some newcomers.

Business Council of Alberta president Adam Legge says questions about potentially excluding certain immigrants from services like health care should be addressed to Premier Danielle Smith.

Barring services to some newcomers is a solution being put forward on immigration on the panel's website.
