Path detoured, lanes down, sweepers incoming: Airdrie’s spring work begins

Roadwork, pathway repairs and street sweeping are all underway as spring maintenance season ramps up across Airdrie and Rocky View County.

According to the City of Airdrie's website, repairs to a pedestrian bridge in Nose Creek Park are slated to begin today. While the work is underway, path access through the area will be closed until Sept. 1. Detours will be in place along the pathway system to route pedestrians around the work zone. 

 

April on Airdrie roads: lane closures, street sweepers and RV parking rules

 

Lane closures, pathway disruptions, the hum of street sweepers and the scramble for RV parking space—April is shaping up to be a busy month on Airdrie roads.

The first impact is already underway. As of April 1, pathways in the Stonegate neighbourhood are experiencing intermittent closures to allow for dry pond rehabilitation. Meanwhile, Range Road 291 will face temporary, intermittent lane closures between now and April 28 to make way for subdivision construction.

Update: Crashes, slush and ice: Calgary’s roads a mess for Airdrie commuters

Multiple traffic incidents across Calgary, amid winter road conditions on key commuter routes, slowed Airdrie drivers Thursday morning.

Southbound 14 Street at Stoney Trail NW was affected by a traffic incident. On the northeast side, a collision blocked the left lane on eastbound Airport Trail at 60 Street NE. Further west, a separate incident blocked the right lane on northbound Stoney Trail at McKnight Boulevard NE.

Snowfall warning skips Airdrie —but roads don't care

Drivers heading in and out of Airdrie can expect winter driving conditions again this morning, with snow-covered lanes, icy shoulders, and slippery conditions on major routes on Wednesday after overnight snowfall blanketed the region.

The QEII from the Calgary city limits to north of the Highway 2A junction was partly covered in snow, with Alberta 511 reporting slush, icy wheel paths and good visibility. Secondary conditions included icy sections and snow on the shoulder.

Inside Airdrie and south toward Calgary, conditions remained slick.

Update: Another jackknifed semi blocks QEII near Carstairs

A semi-trailer jackknifed on the QEII between Highway 2A and Highway 581 Wednesday morning has been cleared. 

Two earlier incidents on the northbound QEII near the same junction were cleared earlier in the morning. A semi jackknifed just south of Highway 581 around 7:02 a.m., with a follow-up update at 7:35 a.m. confirming the vehicle had been cleared.

UPDATE: Hazardous highway conditions and collision in Airdrie

Snow, ice, and slush have created dangerous driving conditions in and around Airdrie on Wednesday morning, leading to collisions and travel delays.

Emergency crews responded to a crash on Edmonton Trail near Third Avenue. Airdrie Fire and EMS were on scene, but there were no immediate details on injuries or the number of vehicles involved. The scene is now clear.

Stoney Trail N.W. was closed southbound from Crowchild Trail and Scenic Acres View N.W. to Nose Hill Drive. An early morning fatal vehicle collision led to the road closure for an investigation. 

Update: Jack-knifed semi jams northbound QEII near Carstairs amid April snow dump

A jack-knifed semi-trailer that was blocking the northbound QEII just south of the Highway 581 junction, southeast of Carstairs, has been cleared. 

The incident was reported shortly after 7:00 a.m., according to 511 Alberta. Southbound traffic had already been affected earlier in the morning when a semi spun out near Township Road 310, northeast of Carstairs. That crash was cleared by 6:54 a.m., but one lane was closed while emergency crews responded.

Snowfall warning lifted, but Airdrie motorists should prepare for winter drive

Highway conditions in and around Airdrie remained treacherous on Wednesday morning, with snow, ice, and zero visibility reported across multiple routes. 

According to 511 Alberta, Highway 2 is partly covered in snow south toward Calgary and north past the Highway 2A junction, with shoulder ice, icy sections, slush, and limited visibility reported.

Update: Snowfall warning continues as Airdrie roads may worsen

A snowfall warning issued earlier Tuesday by Environment Canada has since been lifted. 

The warning, was in effect for Rocky View County near Airdrie and Crossfield, called for 5 to 10 centimetres of snow overnight, with some areas possibly seeing up to 15 centimetres. Snow is expected to end by Wednesday morning.

"Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations," the agency said. "Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow."
