G7 security measures lifting: What does that mean for Airdrie motorists?

The RCMP-led Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG) has confirmed that most G7-related restrictions have been lifted, with airspace, highway, and demonstration zone controls now terminated.

As of 12:00 p.m. On Wednesday, the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and all airspace restrictions related to the G7 Summit were officially lifted. The Controlled Access Zone (CAZ) surrounding key summit venues was deactivated at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday.

As world leaders depart Canada following the 2025 G7 Summit, federal officials say residents should expect continued police presence and traffic disruptions during the demobilization process.

The Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG) announced on Tuesday that crews are now clearing equipment, removing police vehicles, dismantling security operations, and conducting environmental remediation at designated sites.

Update: Airdrie drivers: Collision stalls northbound Deerfoot near Airport Trail

Northbound Deerfoot Trail traffic slowed to a crawl Thursday morning after a collision near Airport Trail NE blocked the left-hand lane, though the scene has since been cleared. 

The incident occurred between Beddington Trail and Airport Trail, according to 511 Alberta, which reported lane closures, no passing, speed reductions and significant congestion in the area. Drivers were advised to expect delays and use caution.

What Airdrie drivers need to know as G7 restrictions ramp up

Security measures are now active in Kananaskis ahead of the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit, with area closures, checkpoints and access restrictions already in place — and additional traffic controls beginning Saturday.

A federally designated controlled access zone came into effect June 10 and will remain in place through June 18, limiting public access to key sites in the Kananaskis Valley. Summit organizers and RCMP are advising travellers to expect further restrictions this weekend, including a Highway 40 parking ban, reduced campground access, and continued closure of Highwood Pass.

A fuel tanker fire that shut down westbound Highway 1 at Stoney Trail NW on Thursday has been cleared, according to 511 Alberta.

At 10:44 p.m., 511 Alberta reported the westbound collision near the Stoney Trail NW junction had been cleared.

Earlier in the day, Calgary police said all four westbound lanes of Highway 1 from Stoney Trail NW were closed due to a fuel tanker fire. Traffic was being diverted from Highway 1 onto northbound and southbound Stoney Trail.

A motor vehicle collision in the vicinity of 40th Avenue and 8th Street has been cleared.

On Thursday afternoon, motorists reported delays due to the collision, though there was no information available on the number of vehicles involved or the extent of injuries.

Drivers were asked to exercise caution in the area as emergency crews attended the scene.
