Intersection collisions spike in January
Statistics are showing that January sees an increase in intersection-related collisions.
"One in four collisions on Alberta roads occurs at an intersection, resulting in thousands of dollars in damages, countless injuries and needless deaths each year," the province warned.
Update: Smash up causing lane closures in Airdrie
A multi-vehicle collision in the vicinity of the intersection of 8 Street and Bayside Boulevard has been cleared.
Earlier, on Tuesday morning traffic travelling Eastbound via Bayside Boulevard was completely blocked off, while Southbound traffic on 8 Street was slow going due to lane closures, and only one lane flowing. Northbound traffic was not affected.
Emergency crews were on the scene, though there are no details on whether there were injuries.
Here are the road conditions after the snowfall last night
Driving conditions have left some Airdronians worried after the snowfall last night.
According to reports, roadways in and around Airdrie are partly snow-covered or icy in some spots.
The QEII northbound of Airdrie is smooth sailing until the Red Deer area where it becomes snow and ice-covered in some areas, southbound is good until you get to Calgary according to 511 Alberta. Secondary routes like Highway 567 and Big Hill Springs Road are partly snow-covered with some ice.
Blowing snow and ice may make for hazardous drive near Airdrie
With up to five centimetres of snow forecasted to fall in and around Airdrie and the surrounding areas, motorists are reminded to exercise caution.
Due to strong wind gusts that are also accompanying the snowfall, there are reports of blowing snow on the QEII headed Southbound towards Calgary city limits. There is also ice and snow buildup on the shoulders of the highway, as well as slippery sections.
Mounties issue reminder ahead of snowfall
Alberta's Mounties are asking drivers to use caution on the roads this weekend as local forecasts are predicting several centimetres of snowfall.
"Winter driving can be a white-knuckle ride. Snow, ice and long, nights all pose challenges to those behind the wheel. Whether you operate a car, truck or snowmobile, winter driving requires special attention," police said.

With Airdrie and the surrounding areas preparing for several days of snowfall in the coming week, motorists can expect to see an increase in snow plows and other road maintenance vehicles on the roads and the recent collision in Calgary's Southeast is a stark reminder of the dangers of speeding in the vicinity of road maintenance vehicles.
Redeveloping fog may make for difficult driving
A fog advisory that was put into effect on Tuesday evening is continuing for Airdrie and the surrounding areas.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), persistent fog with visibility near zero is expected or occurring.
"Fog will redevelop overnight tonight with some improvement expected Thursday afternoon. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. If travelling, be prepared for areas of near-zero visibility."
Motorists are asked to exercise caution as road conditions may change.
Fatality confirmed in collision east of Airdrie
One person has died after a late-night multi-vehicle motor collision east of Beiseker on Tuesday evening.
Mounties said they have since cleared the scene on Highway 9.
Ice and fog creating hazards on highways
Motorists are reminded to drive to the conditions as fog continues to blanket Airdrie and the surrounding areas.
Early on Wednesday morning, the QEII headed Southbound towards Calgary city limits had reduced visibility, as well as ice fog and icy sections.
Heading north of Airdrie towards Crossfield and Carstairs, road conditions were also reported to be foggy.
Update: Airdrie RCMP on scene of serious motor vehicle collision
Airdrie RCMP is currently on the scene of a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 9 at Range Road 252 near Beiseker.
Traffic was being diverted in both directions, with officers anticipating to remain remaining on the scene for several hours. Early on Wednesday morning, it was reported that the portion of the highway was fully re-opened.
