Fitness hearing for Adam Kai-Ji Lo, accused of 11 murders at Vancouver festival

The man accused of ramming an SUV into a crowd and killing 11 people at the Vancouver Lapu Lapu Day festival is set to appear in court today, with a judge determining if he's fit to stand trial.

RJ Aquino, the chair of festival organizer Filipino BC, says the court proceedings could prove "traumatizing" for victims and members of the Filipino community.

He says many have expressed anger and frustration since the April 26 attack and still find it difficult to cope with the tragedy almost three months later.

Crime severity index dropped four per cent last year, Statistics Canada says

The volume and severity of police-reported crime in Canada decreased four per cent last year after three annual increases in a row, the national statistics agency said Tuesday.

Statistics Canada said non-violent crime had a significant effect on the decline in the overall crime severity index in 2024.

The non-violent crime severity index — which includes such crimes as property and drug offences — dropped six per cent last year, following a nine per cent increase from 2021 to 2023.

Phyllis Yvonne Weimer, late of Weyburn, SK passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025 at the age of 89 years.

Paulette Block, late of Weyburn, SK passed away on July 21, 2025 at the age of 73 years.

She was predeceased by her parents, John and Juliette Lindstrom; in-laws, May and Otto Block; aunt and uncle, Erna and Joe Wanner.

Paulette is survived by her husband of 51 years, Allan Block of Weyburn, SK; son, Curtis (Shauna) Block of Weyburn, SK and their sons [Carter, Tyler]; daughter, Sandra (Curtis) Popescu of Weyburn, SK and their children [Lily, Daisy, Oakley]; and special cousin, Larry Pearson.

McCain Foods looks for new processing potatoes

Company works with Farming Smarter Association as it searches for options other than the century-old Russet Burbank variety.

Russet Burbank has been the go to potato variety for Canadian farmers and consumers.

This year, McCain Foods in Chin, Alta., has entered a corporate partnership with the Farming Smarter Association to explore the viability of other varieties in its food processing plant for farmers to consider.

Farming Smarter is using one of its commercial plots to do a research trial growing four varieties using six treatments.

Weyburn mayor positive about interprovincial trade MOU

The provincial government announced the signing of a new memorandum of understanding between Premier Scott Moe and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew on Monday. The agreement is aimed at improving interprovincial trade.  

While the agreement is less than 24 hours old, it is already being met with optimism by many in the Weyburn area. This includes Mayor Jeff Richards, who pointed out the agreement could have a number of benefits for the city’s businesses, as well as its economy.  

Weyburn Pharmasave plays role in successful provincial pharmacy pilot

The Pharmasave location on 3rd Street in Weyburn is one of 35 pharmacies across Saskatchewan taking part in what is being called a successful provincial pilot program. Since January, specially trained pharmacists at this location have been able to assess patients for suspected ear infections, providing timely advice and treatment. The program is being hailed as a success by the government due to the thousands of assessments that have been conducted across the province.  

Conditions have Weyburn area farmers positive midway through the season

“We’re looking at a possible bumper crop in the Weyburn area.” 

Dale Paslawski, who farms north of Weyburn, is one of the many farmers in the region who are feeling very positive about this year’s crop. With how this year is playing out in the southeast, it is hard for many not to be positive.
