The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings training camp begins this weekend at Crescent Point Place and Nick Nielsen, the voice of the Wings, is excited about what the weekend will showcase.

“I'm looking forward to seeing this team turn a bit of a corner towards some new horizons and better horizons this year," he said.  

Red Wings hold AGM, feel positive about upcoming season

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Wings had their Annual General Meeting at the Ramada Hotel on Tuesday evening.  

Many items were on the agenda such as amendments to bylaws, reports, and nominations of board members. A change to the bylaws to split the Secretary-Treasurer position into two different jobs was accepted. 

The auditor's report, which was presented by MNP, showed they are financially viable, with a profit of around $6,000 last season.  

Red Wings to open 2022-23 season in Melville

The SJHL released the schedule for the 2022-23 season Monday morning. This year, the league is moving from a 58-game season to a 56-game schedule.  

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings will open the season on September 16th on the road, travelling to Melville for a game against the Millionaires. The team will then be in Yorkton on September 21st before they play their home opener on September 23rd when the Estevan Bruins come to town.  

Red Wings add blueliner through trade

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings announced a trade over the weekend. 

The team acquired 03-born defenseman Sam Boldt from the Merritt Centennials of the BCHL. 

Originally hailing from Regina, Boldt split his time last season between the Camrose Kodiaks of the AJHL and the Centennials. Appearing in 37 Junior A games last year, he picked up six points, including two goals.  

SJHL Draft underway

11:59 a.m. - Heading into the draft, the Weyburn Red Wings didn't have a selection in the 5th round. A deal with the Nipawin Hawks, though, moved the Wings up to 2nd in the round (50th overall). With that pick, Weyburn went with 06-board goaltender Eric Kahl of the Saskatoon Blazers. Playing in 22 games last year, Kahl finished the season with a GAA of 2.60, and save percentage of .890, picking up three shutouts along the way.

Red Wings make deal with Nipawin

The Weyburn Red Wings announced a trade with the Nipawin Hawks yesterday.

Coming to Weyburn is 04-born forward Carter Wickenheiser. Originally from Regina, Wickenheiser played in 56 games last season, his first in the SJHL. Over those games, he put up 12 points, including four goals.

Also coming to Weyburn in the trade is a 2nd round pick in next year's 08-born draft. 

In exchange, the Hawks are receiving the 5th overall pick in this year's 06-born draft, as well as a 2nd round pick in the 2024 08-born draft.

"Wouldn't be possible at all": Volunteers key to Red Wings success

For many organizations in Weyburn, volunteers are crucial to their day-to-day operations. This includes many sports organizations, such as the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings. 

Nick Nielsen is the office and public relations manager with the hockey team. While he has only been in the position for a few weeks, he has already seen how the volunteers play an important role.
