Red Wings skid extends to three games in La Ronge
The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings went into Friday's game in La Ronge against the Ice Wolves looking to break out of a funk after dropping two games in a row. The Ice Wolves, though, would score three goals in the second period - two on the power play - to beat Weyburn 4-2.
"We've got to start competing harder," said forward Matty Edwards, who scored the first goal of the game for the Red Wings in the second period. "It starts from the puck drop, first period, so if we have a better first period I think we'll be just all right."
Red Wings falter in Melfort
Special teams would prove to be the biggest difference last night, as the Melfort Mustangs scored five power play goals en route to a 5-2 win over the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings.
“Melfort took it to us early in the game, and they kind of established a physical presence out there and we didn’t really have a response to it,” said assistant coach Casey O’Brien after the game.
Red Wings stumble at home against Bruins
The Estevan Bruins would score three goals in the third period to stun a raucous crowd at Crescent Point Place Saturday, as the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings fell at home 5-2.
"We weren't sharp this weekend," said Red Wings head coach Cody Mapes after the game. "Having the team separated for a week, it's a funny week of practice and stuff like that. At the end of the day, we got a split. It is what it is. We'll move forward and be better for it tomorrow."
Red Wings pick up two big points in Estevan
The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings moved closer to clinching the Highway 39 Cup Friday night, as they topped the Estevan Bruins 3-2 in overtime. The win also pulled the Red Wings within four points of the Flin Flon Bombers for second overall in the SJHL.
"Honestly, it starts with our goaltending," said head coach Cody Mapes when asked after the game about how they were able to come away with two points. "I thought Ty (Matonovich) was unbelievable tonight. He made sure he gave us a chance."
Highway 39 rivalry heating up
The Battle for the Highway 39 Cup resumes on Friday, when the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings head to Estevan to take on the Bruins at Affinity Place. The two teams will then come back to Weyburn Saturday night for the second half of the home-and-home at Crescent Point Place.
Red Wings double up Terriers in Yorkton
Just one night after the franchise’s 1700th win in the SJHL, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings picked up their 1701st as they doubled up the Yorkton Terriers 6-3. The win also opened up a seven-point edge over the Terriers for first in the Viterra Division.
Red Wings make history, top Bombers in overtime
An overtime goal by Max Chakrabarti with 1:29 remaining in the extra period gave the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings their 1700th win in franchise history, as they defeated the Flin Flon Bombers 3-2 Friday night at Crescent Point Place.
"Betty (captain Blake Betson) gave me a nice pass with lots of space going downhill, and I kind of just made a little move and let it rip," Chakrabarti said of the goal after the game. "Luckily it went in and got the game winner, so that's nice."
Red Wings keep Hounds collared in big home win
Ty Matonovich picked up the win in his first start as a Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings, and Jerome Maharaj scored twice as the Red Wings skated to a 6-1 victory on home ice Tuesday night, defeating the Notre Dame Hounds.
“I was feeling great,” Matonovich said after the game. “I saw every shot, and D played great, the boys played great, and we outscored them. That’s all you can ask for at that point.”
Zol earns honours, again
Another week, another honour for one of the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings. Angelo Zol was named the SJHL’s Goalie of the Week after his performance in three games last week.
Red Wings put Ice Wolves in dog house at CPP
The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings scored early, and often, as they routed the La Ronge Ice Wolves 8-2 at Crescent Point Place Saturday night. Max Chakrabarti scored a pair of goals, and Jerome Maharaj entered the record books en route to the victory, which came the day after Weyburn's five-game winning streak was halted by the Melville Millionaires.
"We talked last night, and this morning, about being a team that if the Weyburn Red Wings are going to lose a game, you don't want to be the next team to play them," head coach Cody Mapes said after the game.
