The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings are gearing up for an exciting game on Monday as the Highway 39 cup continues. They’ll face the Estevan Bruins at Crescent Point Place at 3 p.m. but it doesn’t stop there.
Ryder Burns, sales and marketing director with the Weyburn Red Wings, explains they saw an opportunity with a Family Day game and took it.
“We wanted to make it big, we ended up with the Family Day game on our schedule, so we thought we'd make something of it as it's a holiday. People need something to do and why not come to a Red Wings game?”
Fans aged 17 and under will have free admission to the game. The day also celebrates Red Wing alumni players and coaches, who will also have free entry and be recognized throughout the game.
“They'll get access to the nest, what we call it, is our booth up in the box. They'll be getting introductions throughout the intermissions just to showcase everything they've done for us and who they played for.”
Anyone keeping up with the Red Wings social media knows they’re teasing their new playoff jerseys. Burns says Monday will be their first appearance on the ice.
“Our new jerseys have come in and we're going to showcase those. We got some teasers going out on our social media just to show little details and get people excited. But I know they look good, and I want people to see how they look as we push into the playoffs.”
The Wings are also taking the opportunity to promote mental health in collaboration with the Canadian Mental Health Association. They’ll be handing touques out to fans branded with the Red Wings and CMHA logos.
“We're going to have our cannon, shoot them on the stands, have our mascot Howie give some away and also give some away at the start of the game to the first few that come in the door.”
“It's important for our players to know when they take a few losses, you need to keep your mental health important and it's good to showcase our support to them.”
Finally, fans will have the opportunity to skate with the Wings after the game. Burns says this will be the final skate with the Wings of the season.
“We will have a dressing room available near the end of the game for people to get their stuff on. Then they can go out and the players will come out on the ice after the game for 30 minutes and you can just skate around with them and talk to them, have some fun.”
