Truck collides with Sturgeon Community Hospital

People at the Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert got quite a scare on Sunday (Mar. 26) night. 

At about 8 p.m. a black truck reportedly smashed through the hospital's main entrance. 

The truck took out a cement pillar before tearing apart the doors to the building. 

According to a witness, the driver of the truck exited the vehicle after the collision and went to the emergency room to receive care. 

The vehicle was removed from the building about an hour later. 

Police have not revealed any information on the incident. 

CN reports strong grain movement


Grain from the prairies has been moving east in anticipation of the Port of Thunder Bay re-opening.

Assistant Vice President of Grain for CN Rail David Przednowek says they would expect to see shipments beginning any day now, there's not a lot of ice on the lakes.

"The demand started picking up for shipments in Thunder Bay a couple of weeks ago, to start to help charge the pipeline."

He says it should be rolling soon as they've been moving grain to the port to fill up the space in the terminal.

Here's how much money Albertans will receive on April 15

Albertans will be getting some extra spending money, thanks to the federal government.

The federal Climate Action Incentive (CAI) will see a boost in the amount the rebate offers for those living in the province.

On April 15, Albertans will receive:

  • $193 for an individual, up from the previous $134.75
  • $96.50 for a spouse or common-law partner, up from the previous $67.50
  • $48.25 per child under 18, up from the previous $33.75

Other rebates for the CAI will occur in July, October, as well as January of next year.

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP participating in funeral for fallen EPS officers

The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP will be in attendance for the funeral of the two fallen EPS officers at Rogers Place on Monday (Mar. 27) afternoon. 

The detachment will send 10 of their own to pay respects to constables Brett Ryan and Travis Jordan, who lost their lives in the line of duty while responding to a domestic call in Edmonton earlier this month. 

KidSport Fort Saskatchewan increases funding limit

KidSport Fort Saskatchewan has raised its funding limit for athletes entering its program.

KidSport is a program that allows children in need to play sports that would otherwise be too expensive through the costs of sports registration fees and equipment.

Roger Ethier, president of the Fort Saskatchewan branch, says they've raised their threshold from $400 to $500.

"We hadn't done an increase in a while, so we felt it was time," said Ethier. "With the increasing costs of everything with inflation and everything, we felt the time was right."

Twice But Nice hands out over $23,000 in grants

Twice But Nice held its annual meeting at the Dow Centennial Centre earlier this week.

The meeting included sharing their achievements in 2022, their goals for 2023, and hearing from their grantees.

"Last year we granted over $23,000 to 11 organizations for 13 projects within our community," said president Judy Rehill. "This is an increase of over 53 per cent over the previous year's grants."

Money made from the downtown second store goes to the groups and projects. 

GALLERY: U17 AAA Rangers win big at the JRC

The U17 AAA South Fort Chev Rangers dominated the MLAC Beverly Optimist Leafs, bringing them one step closer to the division finals.

On Thursday (Mar. 23) night at the Jubilee Recreation Centre, the Rangers won game one in a best of three, 8-2.

Dylan Puk and Ty Van Brabant lead the team with two goals each.

Goalie Gage Roberts made 25 saves on 27 shots. 

The Rangers next game is on Saturday, 3:45 p.m. at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre in Edmonton. If the Rangers win, they'll be onto the finals.

United Way announces partner for 2023 Heartland Challenge

United Way has announced that the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank will be its partner for the 2023 Heartland Challenge.

The Heartland Challenge is a program where companies work on initiatives to help their local communities. 

"The need for food is on the rise," said United Way co-chair Alana Seymour. "Supporting the food bank was very important to the committee, who also saw the potential to use their skills to execute many of the projects the food bank has identified."

Sherwood Park Knights on the verge of championship

The Capital Junior Hockey League (CJHL) championship could be calling Sherwood Park home soon. 

The Sherwood Park Knights are currently in the midst of the championship series against the St. Albert Merchants, with the Knights holding a decisive 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. 

It was a long road for the Knights to get to this point. After finishing atop the East Division, and second in the league behind the Merchants, the team was able to secure a bye past the first round.
