'It's a celebration of culture': Winnipeg Goldeyes to host National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day and the Winnipeg Goldeyes are doing something special to celebrate. 

"We have an indigenous band playing on the promenade before the game. We have hoop dancers. Our anthem singer, Pamela, is awesome. And we're just celebrating the culture," said Dan Chase, Director of Sales and Marketing for the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Agra Risk Wheatland Kings head to streaming

The Agra Risk Wheatland Kings will be streaming their games.

Earlier this month the Strathmore-based hockey team announced a six-year exclusive broadcasting agreement with FloSports.

"Through FloHockey, fans across the province and beyond will now be able to watch Heritage Junior Hockey League (HJHL) games live and on demand," wrote general manager Cody Holdaway.

The Kings are one of six teams who are helping to launch the platform within the HJHL. The team believes that the partnership will serve as a meaningful investment in the future of the league.

Tough night for Goldeyes as Canaries even series

The Sioux Falls Canaries (20-16) evened their series with the Winnipeg Goldeyes (16-19) Wednesday evening, using a nine-run fourth inning and five total home runs to secure a 15-2 win at Blue Cross Park.
 
The Canaries opened the scoring in the first inning after a dropped fly ball in left field allowed Mike Hart to score. The Goldeyes answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame, as Tanner O’Tremba delivered a two-run double to left-centre, scoring Ramón Bramasco and Roby Enríquez to briefly put Winnipeg ahead 2-1.

They came from behind with two runs in the bottom of the 10th and the Moose Jaw Miller Express came away with a 7 - 6 win over the Regina Red Sox at Ross Wells Park last night.

Outfielder Austin Gurney drove home the winning run. He went 3 for 6 at the plate. Nathan Pisio earned the win on the mound, striking out three in three-and-two-thirds innings of work.

The Millers will play the 57's in Swift Current tonight - they were outscored 13 -12 by Medicine Hat last evening.

Brooks belts two homers as Beavers tame Cactus Rats at Tom Laing

The Weyburn Beavers brought the bats and then some Wednesday night at Tom Laing Park, snapping a four-game losing skid in emphatic fashion with an 18-7 win over the visiting Energy City Cactus Rats. 

Weyburn’s offence exploded for 12 hits and drew 11 walks in a game that saw left fielder Noah Brooks have a career night, launching two home runs, including a leadoff solo shot in the first, and finishing with five RBIs. 

57's comeback comes up short against Medicine Hat

A huge comeback fell just short for the Swift Current 57's in WCBL action.

Down 13-2 to the Medicine Hat Mavericks, Swift Current put 10 runs on the board in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Swift Current sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning.

Medicine Hat held on for a 13-12 win.

Wimer Henriquez went 1 for 4 with 2 walks and 3 RBIs for the 57's.

Gus Koen went 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI, while Brody Alexander went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.

The 57's are back at it tonight against Moose Jaw at Mitchell Field.

Chiefs goalie Merckx awarded R.A. "Sam" Fabro Memorial Scholarship

After an incredible season on the ice, in the classroom and in the community, U18 AAA Yellowhead Chiefs goalie Clair Merckx has been awarded the R.A. "Sam" memorial scholarship.

"It was pretty exciting," Merckx says when thinking back to when she got the news. "I was just finishing up one of my classes at schools, I looked down and saw the email. I texted my mom and it was a pretty exciting feeling."

The scholarship comes with some money as well. "$750", the star netminder says with a smile. 

Thunder goalie Hildebrand named Buck Matiowski Memorial Scholarship recipient

After a sensational season on the ice, in the classroom and in the community, Morden Thunder goalie Easton Hildebrand was awarded the Buck Matioski Memorial Scholarship by Hockey Manitoba. 

"I actually saw it on my friends story," Hildebrand says with a laugh when thinking back to how he found out. "I wasn't sure what I won, but when I found out I won the scholarship, I didn't even know at the time."

The Scholarship came with some money as well. "That specific one comes with $750," Hildebrand says with a smile.
