Chiefs goalie Merckx awarded R.A. "Sam" Fabro Memorial Scholarship
After an incredible season on the ice, in the classroom and in the community, U18 AAA Yellowhead Chiefs goalie Clair Merckx has been awarded the R.A. "Sam" memorial scholarship.
"It was pretty exciting," Merckx says when thinking back to when she got the news. "I was just finishing up one of my classes at schools, I looked down and saw the email. I texted my mom and it was a pretty exciting feeling."
The scholarship comes with some money as well. "$750", the star netminder says with a smile.
Thunder goalie Hildebrand named Buck Matiowski Memorial Scholarship recipient
After a sensational season on the ice, in the classroom and in the community, Morden Thunder goalie Easton Hildebrand was awarded the Buck Matioski Memorial Scholarship by Hockey Manitoba.
"I actually saw it on my friends story," Hildebrand says with a laugh when thinking back to how he found out. "I wasn't sure what I won, but when I found out I won the scholarship, I didn't even know at the time."
The Scholarship came with some money as well. "That specific one comes with $750," Hildebrand says with a smile.
Kirwan twins sign with Battlefords in SJHL
The Kirwan twins are headed north.
Gull Lake's Sam and Will Kirwan have signed with the Battlefords North Stars in the SJHL.
They both just graduated from the U18 AAA Swift Current Home Hardware Legionnaires.
Sam is a forward who had 16 goals and 22 assists last season.
“Sam is a great skater," said Stars Head Coach Connor Logan in a team release. "He’s first to pucks and is hard to defend. He is a versatile two-way player that’s gonna make some key contributions to our front end."
St. Laurent wrestler pursues Olympic dream on world stage
Sixteen-year-old Beau Chartrand of St. Laurent is set to take on the international stage once again as he prepares to represent Canada at the U17 Pan American Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from June 19th to 22nd.
Chartrand earns a spot on the Canadian national team for the second straight year and is looking to build on his momentum after winning bronze at last year’s Pan Ams in the Dominican Republic.
He secured his spot after winning the Canadian team trials and Nationals.
D Orin Olson commits to Briercrest College
Defenceman Orin Olson will be playing hockey close to home next season.
The Chaplin, SK product has committed to the Briercrest Clippers Hockey team of Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) for the upcoming season.
Miller Express close out series against 57s with a win
The Moose Jaw Miller Express picked up a 5–2 win over the 57s in Swift Current on Tuesday night to take three of four games in the series.
After two scoreless innings, Moose Jaw got on the board first in the top of the third. Jackson Yeager hit a single to left field to score Thomas Soto.
Swift Current replied in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs to take a 2–1 lead.
Both teams went scoreless through the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Several Hammerheads finish on the podium at home swim meet
209 swimmers from the province were in Humboldt at the Aquatic Centre on the weekend for the annual Humboldt Hammerheads Swim Meet.
It was a strong showing for the Hammerheads as several local swimmers placed on the podium.
