President and Chair of Hanover Soccer talks EYSL season end tournaments and the future

This past weekend was filled with soccer across three different locations as Eastman Youth Soccer League held their year-end tournaments in four different age groups, once again showing how the sport continues to grow across the province. 

"It's a big event for us, the EYSL season-end tournament," explains Brian Froese, President and Chair of Hanover Soccer Club. "Steinbach hosted the U13 and U18 age groups, Beausejour had the U11 and Niverville at the U15 age groups."

Young Guns looking to keep bats hot heading into final few games

The South West Baseball League season has moved right along and of late, the offense of the Brandon Young Guns has propelled the team forward and player/manager Chris Campbell is looking to keep it going down the stretch. 

"It was a tough start, but we're starting to come around," Campbell says of his teams season. "The bats have been hot all year, it's just a matter of shoring up the defensive side of the game and getting some better outings on the mound, but we're coming around and playing better."

Water Ninjas launch fundraiser ahead of Commonwealth lifesaving championships

The Cochrane Water Ninjas, representing Canada at the 2025 Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships in Swansea, Wales, have launched a fundraising campaign to help cover associated costs.

Jack Dunse, Isaac Thibodeau, Oliver Johnson, Caebri Smith, and Danica Fisher have all been named to the team, along with alternates Rylee Bashow and Corbin Gilbert.

The championships are scheduled for July 10 to 13.

Piranhas compete in major swimming competitions

Two swimmers from the Cochrane Piranhas delivered standout performances at a pair of recent high-level, invitation-only swim competitions.

Meadow MacPherson brought home a bronze medal in the 100-metre breaststroke at the Swim Alberta Summer Festival for 12 and under All Stars, held in Lethbridge.

The festival brings together the province’s fastest young swimmers who post qualifying times competitive against the top 12-and-under athletes in Alberta.

Warriors trade away 1st overall pick of CHL Import Draft

The Moose Jaw Warriors continue to build a team for the future after a Monday afternoon trade with the Kelowna Rockets.

They have traded their first-round pick (first overall) at the 2025 CHL Import Draft, in exchange for a second-round pick at the 2025 CHL Import Draft (71st overall), a first-round pick in 2026, and a third-round pick in 2027.

The draft provides each team in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) the opportunity to select the rights to eligible import players and is scheduled to take place on July 2, 2025, at 11 a.m.

Swift Current lacrosse playoff results

The South Sask Lacrosse League held their double-elimination playoff tournaments over the weekend.

U17

A heartbreaker for the U17 Swift Current Rampage.

The led Moose Jaw 4-3 in the U17 championship game but fell 7-5 to the Mustangs.

Jackson Dovell scored twice for the Rampage in the loss.

Swift Current beat Regina 10-2, lost 3-1 to Moose Jaw, and beat Weyburn 10-2 in the playoff tournament.

Rebels trade 2022 draft pick Steranka to Warriors

Rebels trade Steven Steranka to Moose Jaw for draft pick.

Red Deer Rebels owner, president and general manager Brent Sutter announced Friday (June 20) the club has completed a trade with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Rebels have sent forward Steven Steranka to the Warriors in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft.

Steranka, a native of Regina, Sask., was selected by Red Deer in the seventh round (148th overall) of the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.

Weyburn gymnasts recognized at annual awards night

The Weyburn Gymnastics Club recognized their athletes last Monday at their annual Awards Night. Five gymnasts received awards for their hard work and dedication competing at the provincial level.

The award categories include Most Sportsmanlike, Most Improved, Most Outstanding, and Most Promising Gymnast. 

The Most Sportsmanlike Award recognizing the demonstration of fair play, respect, team spirit, and support was presented to Sophie Heimlick and Brynn Huebner.
