Sports Round-Up: Tuesday, September 10

The Moose Jaw Warriors roster is down to 26 players after several reassignments, including 2024 top pick Cohen Williams.

The team next plays on Friday night in Swift Current against the Broncos. 

Saskatoon's Rylan Wiens is Sask Sport’s Athlete of the Month for August. Wiens brought home a bronze medal from the 2024 Paris Olympic Games for men’s 10-meter synchronized diving, along with partner Nathan Zsombor-Murray. 

Pedalling or paddling, Bombers Bike Valet will park it ▶️

The Bike Valet at the Blue Bombers Stadium in Winnipeg saw a record number of bicycles parked this weekend during the Banjo Bowl, including two water vehicles. 

"Princess Auto Stadium has quite a few options [for people who don't want to drive]," says Mike Stoton, the Bike Valet Supervisor at the Princess Auto Stadium. "We have really good bussing routes. But our most popular option is our bike valet."

Sports Update - Tuesday, September 10th

The Brandon Wheat Kings have re-assigned forwards Chase Surkan and Prabh Bhathal to their respective U18 teams in Regina and Winnipeg. Surkan, a first-round draft choice of the Wheat Kings in 2024, sustained an injury in the black and gold game that kept him out of the lineup for both pre-season games against the Saskatoon Blades this past weekend. Bhathal, a second-round pick in 2024, had a goal and two assists against the Blades. Goaltender Carson Bjarnason, defenseman Charlie Elick and forward Marcus Nguyen are off to NHL camps.

The Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League will operate with 10 teams for the 2024-25 season. The defending champion Steinbach Huskies, Springfield Xtreme, Niverville Clippers, Red River Mudbugs, Macdonald Swarm, Landmark Blues and East St. Paul Gators are back. The Grunthal Red Wings, Ste. Anne Aces and Mitchell Mustangs have officially rejoined the HTJHL for season 38. The Lorette Comets have taken a leave of absence. The 10 teams have been divided into two divisions for the upcoming season. Steinbach, Mitchell, Ste. Anne, East St.

Sports Update - Tuesday, September 10th

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are one win away from advancing to the American Association's Wolff Cup final. Dayson Croes, Ramón Bramasco and Roby Enríquez had three hits each as the Fish defeated the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks 10-1 Monday night at Newman Outdoor Field in game one of their best-of-three West Division Championship Series. Joey Matulovich started for Winnipeg and went six innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven. Ben Onyshko and Ryder Yakel appeared in relief. Game two goes Wednesday night (6:30 p.m.) at Blue Cross Park. 

'Big' Laursen proves he's the champ

Mac 'Big' Laursen has successfully defended his BFL welterweight title for the first time and is in the hunt for a shot at fighting in the UFC.

The victory against Ashton Charlton of Spokane, WA came in the third one when Big unloaded a rear-naked choke at the Vancouver Convention Centre on Sept. 6.

He's improved to a 7-1 professional record with his lone loss came in his debut match.

Quarterback Carter Kent shines in Spartans' narrow loss to Lakers

The Strathmore Spartans continue the hunt for their first win of the season.

The Spartans took on the Chestermere Lakers on Friday (Sept. 6) and lost 41-28. Despite the defeat, coach Danny Warrack said that the team is getting better.

"It was an improvement. The offense came alive at times, but there's still a lot of work to do, as well," said Warrack. "It was a good effort."

Highlights included quarterback Carter Kent throwing for two touchdowns and good plays by several of the team's veteran players.

Warriors trim preseason roster by three players

The Moose Jaw Warriors have trimmed their preseason roster to 26 players after reassigning three players on Monday.

After opening the preseason schedule against the Regina Pats over the weekend, the Warriors have reassigned defenceman Cohen Williams, along with forwards Preston Hoppe and Maxon Johnston.

Williams, the Warriors’ 2024 second round pick, made his WHL preseason debut on Saturday against Regina in Assiniboia. He will join the Okanagan Hockey Academy’s U18 prep team.
