Rebels introduce “6 p.m. Saturdays” for 2025-26 regular season

The Red Deer Rebels are excited to announce their full 68-game schedule for the 2025-26 Western Hockey League Regular Season.

New for this season! The Rebels have introduced “6 p.m. Saturdays” where all Saturday night home games at the Marchant Crane Centrium will begin one hour earlier at 6 p.m. The Rebels will play 13 Saturday night home games in 2025-26.

Friday and weeknight home games will continue to start at 7 p.m. The Rebels have one Sunday home game in 2025-26 (February 15 vs. Lethbridge) that will start at 4 p.m.

Hofer signs extension with Blues

On draft day when the NHL journey begins for hundreds of players, former Swift Current Broncos goaltender Joel Hofer is continuing his with the St. Louis Blues.

He inked a two-year extension with the Blues worth $6.8 million. 

The 24-year-old went 16-8-3 in 2024-25 with a .04 save percentage and 2.64 goasl against average.

Hofer has played 69 NHL games with the Blues.

St. Louis originally picked the Winnipeg native in the 4th round of the 2018 NHL Draft.

Penguins draft Broncos' Kettles in 2nd round

The Pittsburgh Penguins must like something about defenceman from the Swift Current Broncos.

Pittsburgh picked Broncos defenceman Peyton Kettles today with their 2nd round pick, 39th overall in the NHL Draft.

The Penguins also picked former Broncos Captain Owen Pickering in the 1st round of the 2021 NHL Draft.

"Really happy for Petyon," said Broncos GM Chad Leslie. "He's been through a lot to get to this point. He's a player that has a lot of ceiling to develop. He's worked very hard. We are very proud of him."

Cochrane Fusion are city champions

The U15 Cochrane Fusion capped a stellar season with an 18-13 victory over the Airdrie Angels to claim the Division 3 city championship of the Calgary Minor Softball Association last night at Vista Heights.

The Fusion went 4-1 in the playoff round to earn their spot in the final. Their only loss came in a 16-14 nailbiter against SBR, a team they later defeated 10-4 in the semifinals to punch their ticket to the championship game.

The Angels had been undefeated heading into the final, but Cochrane’s momentum proved too much to stop.

Kickers keep up winning ways

Another home game and another victory makes the Hanover Kickers undefeated for the month of June! 

The game started with both sides trading opportunities. In the 8th minute, a long throw by Jonathon Patterson, turned into a scramble in the box and Noah Froese swung at it, only for the to goalie save it, but Noah got his own rebound, and potted it for his first of the night.

The next opportunity came in the 14th minute with a great buildup play and a final pass from Braxton Phommorath to Amity Mazhara, who one-timed it into the back of the net.

MHSAA crowns Athletes of the Year in end-of-school-year ceremony

The Manitoba High School Athletic Association named its top Male and Female Athletes of the Year this week, with eight awards handed out, representing the four divisions.

This year's Double-AA category saw MacGregor and Warren represented, as Kai Gaudet and Colby Darragh were crowned the Male and Female Athletes of the Year, respectively.

U17 Sonic ready for Local Sports Live

Country 94.1's Local Sports Live second dose of Sunday afternoon action, comes with the Swift Current U17 Sonic.

The Sonic host the Valley Vipers for two games at Patterson Ball Diamonds. Game two will be featured on Country 94.1 beginning at 2:50 p.m.

Sonic outfielder Brynn Haubrich said the doubleheader will be critical for them as they build towards a championship run.

"We just want to prepare for provincials, we know they're a good team," she said. "It will be good competition to help us develop and get where we need to be."
