Moose Jaw's Helland sets career saves record at MNU

One Moose Jaw baseball player has forever put his name in the history books at MidAmerica Nazarene University (MNU) in Olathe, Kansas.

Reece Helland has played for the MNU Pioneers for four years. In that time with the team, Helland has achieved a record of 13 wins and 6 losses, maintaining a 4.47 ERA over 84 appearances, including one start and 16 saves.

His final save of the season, recorded on April 26th against Park University, established a new school record for career saves.

6-year-old golfer Liam Penner wins tournament at Maplewood

Liam Penner is just six years old but this past weekend, the golf sensation from Mitchell won a tournament that was held at Maplewood Golf Course.

If you think that six is young, Liam says he started golfing at a much younger age because of someone very special. "(I golf because of) my dad," he says with a big, proud smile. "I was one when I started golf."

Pretty amazing for the young athlete to be getting better as quick as he is, but Liam says he's enjoying the work. "We practice three times a week."

Skinner stops 29 as Oilers get OT win

Former Swift Current Bronco Stuart Skinner made 29 saves to help his Edmonton Oilers start the Stanley Cup Final strong.

Leon Draisaitl struck for his second of the game in overtime, as the Oilers came back from down 3-1 to beat the Florida Panthers 4-3.

Edmonton takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven NHL championship series.

"I think the way that we showed up from the get-go," Skinner said. "The way that we continued to keep on going even though we were down by two, that shows a lot of character by us."

57's fall just short of first win

Sometimes that first win is the hardest one to get.

The Swift Current 57's had the lead through most of the game on Wednesday night but fell 3-2 to the Lethbridge Bulls at Mitchell Field.

The loss dropped Swift Current to 0-6 for the WCBL season.

Muenster's Adam Korte had a strong outing on the mound for the 57's.

He went 7 strong innings allowing 6 hits and only 1 earned run with 3 strikeouts and no walks.

Pilots flying high in early stages of BBL season

The Pilot Mound Pilots are off to a great start to their season in the Border Baseball League and player Clint Maxwell believes the best is still to come. 

"We're definitely happy with how things have started off for us," Maxwell says after his team has come out of the gate with a 4-1 record. "We're hoping we can keep it up for the rest of the year. So far, things have been rolling, we've been hitting the ball wall, pitching well, playing defense well and running the bases. All that stuff adds up to wins."

Broncos announce 2025-26 home opener

The puck will drop in the 2025-26 WHL season with two old rivals going head-to-head.

The Swift Current Broncos announced today their home opener is set for Friday, September 19th against the Regina Pats.

Swift Current will announce their full regular season and playoff schedule at a later date.

The CHL season just concluded with London beating the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Memorial Cup final on Sunday.

Medicine Hat knocked the Broncos out of the 2025 playoffs in the first round.

Sylvan Lake Wranglers to host Legacy Night Thursday

Coming off a championship season, the Sylvan Lake Wranglers of the Heritage Junior Hockey League (HJHL) will host their Legacy Night on Thursday to honour players, graduates, and community supporters.

Previously held as a private awards night for players and families, this year marks the first time the public and sponsors are invited to attend.

“It’s a bit more of a celebration and a way to thank sponsors that helped support the hockey club throughout the year and to acknowledge our players for a championship,” said Pat Garritty, general manager of the team.

Strathmore lacrosse player honoured through memorial fund

Lukas Loftus was only 15 years old when he passed away in 2009. 

Born in 1994, Lukas grew up on an acreage just outside of Carseland. He spent between kindergarten and Grade 6 at Carseland School, growing a love for sports and joining the soccer club at just five years old.

"Luke joined the Boy Scouts, and he was a natural for all of it. Cooking, camping, making fires, fishing, sports, and anything else outdoors," wrote Lukas' mother Shawna.
