Wirth proud of groups efforts at track event in Edmonton

A group of track athletes and their coach went to Edmonton for a special event, and all involved came away proud of the efforts, as well as a greater understanding of what it will take to find that next level.

"It was good, it was good, it was a long, long trip," coach Al Wirth says with a chuckle. "15 hours on a bus, so it was a long trip. But, the kids worked hard and competed well. We didn't get any medals, which is unfortunate, but we did get some top eight finishes, which is nice."

57's fall twice on the road

A rough weekend on the road for the Swift Current 57's in WCBL action.

They fell 24-4 in Medicine Hat on Saturday and 15-1 in Regina yesterday.

Braxton Vail and Trigg Mapes hit home runs in the loss against Medicine Hat.

Vail also went 2 for 4 against the Red Sox.

Swift Current is again in Medicine Hat today and then host the Mavericks on Tuesday.

Gull Lake wins 15U AA Tier 2 provincial baseball championship

The Gull Lake Greyhounds are the Saskatchewan 15U AA Tier 2 provincial baseball champions.

They beat the Saskatoon Prairie A's 22-12 to win it.

Gull Lake started the tournament July 18th with a 18-8 win over the Saskatoon Braves.

They then beat the Sask Five Generals 19-9 and lost 12-11 to the Saskatoon Prairie A's on July 19th.

The Greyhounds beat the Saskatoon Blue Jays 5-4 in the semifinal on Friday before their re-match with the Prairie A's.

Bailey set to represent southwest at Canadian Amateur Golf Championship

The Canadian Men's Amateur Golf Championship starts in Ottawa-Gatineau today with Shaunavon's Corey Bailey in the field.

The golf representing Elmwood Golf Club in Swift Current qualified by finishing second in the Saskatchewan Amateur Championship.

"I'm really excited to represent Golf Saskatchewan and the people of Shaunavon and Swift Current," Bailey said. "Hopefully I can do well for everyone at home and do well for myself.

"I'm going to see how my game stacks up against a bunch of these really good amateurs in Canada and from around the world."

Yard Goats win Sask-Alta Baseball League in epic battle with Cabri

Chance Kantrud's RBI single in extra innings clinched the Sask-Alta Baseball League championship for the Swift Current Yard Goats on Sunday night.

The second baseman's grounder through the right side of the infield plated left fielder Carson Rokochy from second as Swift Current knocked off the Cabri River Rats in 12-11 in an instant Sask-Alta finals classic at Mitchell Field.

It wasn't just thunder from the grandstand on Saturday night, but Mother Nature sent her own downpour of rain, which muddied the track at the High River Ag grounds.

However, the rain didn't pour down until about halfway through the heats, which caused some slower times and significantly altered the aggregate standings.

The 'Rangeland Rockstar' Chanse Vigen still sits in first in the aggregate, but Evan Magee jumped up from 12th into second in the aggregate, and Cruise Bensmiller jumped up from 11th to fourth as Dustin Gorst hung on and moved up from fifth into third.

Midale Oilmen's Golf Tournament a success

The 33rd annual Midale Oilmen's Golf Tournament was held on July 11th at the Mainprize Golf Course, raising just over $12,000 from the game and sponsors.

Darren Moldenhauer said, "We had a great day. We had 72 golfers with Payden Benning and Nolan Rohatyn having the low round for the day."

He said the Horse Race winners were Anthony Melle and Brock Simpson.
