RDCRS students attend STEM boot camp
Students from Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) got to explore potential careers in engineering technology during a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Boot Camp.
The event was held in partnership with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET) and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).
A potential rail strike has been delayed
Last Thursday, Canada's Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan requested clarity from the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) on whether or not the movement of propane qualifies as an essential service that would have to be maintained during a labour disruption.
CN Rails Assistant Vice President of Grain, David Przednowek says, as a result of that request, there can be no labour disruption before the Industrial Relations Board issues a decision.
Red Deer Councillor Chad Krahn sworn in
Red Deer’s newest Councillor, Chad Krahn was sworn in on Monday (May 13) before the regular meeting of council.
Krahn is the first-ever councillor in Red Deer to be elected during a municipal by-election.
The by-election was held on April 22.
RCMP charge multiple prolific offenders
On May 10, just after midnight, Evansburg RCMP received a complaint of suspicious vehicles in Parkland County, along Highway 627.
Police attended the area, located two suspicious trucks, and attempted to complete a traffic stop. The drivers attempted to flee the area and rammed one of the RCMP vehicles.
With the assistance of Edmonton Air Services, Mayerthorpe RCMP, Parkland RCMP, and Drayton Valley RCMP, the members proceeded to pursue both vehicles, resulting in the arrest of three males and one female.
Walking Tours highlighting Lacombe’s history all summer
Lacombe’s Historic Downtown Walking Tours are starting back up this weekend.
On Saturday (May 18), residents and visitors are invited to join the Lacombe Museum for a historic walking tour and learn about the history of downtown for the summer.
Road closure planned in Red Deer County Monday
Red Deer County is advising residents and motorists that there will be road closure today (Monday, May 13th)
Culvert installation is being done of RR 21 just north of Highway 11a.
This work will last until 5:00 pm.
You are asked to please follow all signage and to plan a different route.
Smoke causing poor air quality for Central Alberta
Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for most parts of Central Alberta.
Wildfire smoke coming from northeastern British Columbia is causing a widespread area of very poor air quality and reduced visibility.
Smoke will move eastward through tonight. Conditions should improve by Monday night for most of the province.
Over northern Alberta smoky conditions will continue through Tuesday.
Wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health even at low concentrations. Everyone can take action to reduce their exposure to wildfire smoke.
RDP empowers youth at Education and Career Expo
Central Alberta students were given the opportunity to explore career pathways during the second annual Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Education and Career Expo.
Nearly 3,000 middle and high school students and current RDP students attended the event.
Central Alberta Humane Society seeking community support
The Central Alberta Humane Society is seeking donations after experiencing rising operational and resource expenses.
The humane society relies on revenue from adoptions, donations, fundraisers, and sponsorships, for companion animal rehabilitation and rehoming in the Central Alberta region.
Chinook’s Edge Associate Superintendent honoured with Roy E. Cope Award
The Chinook’s Edge School board recognized Associate Superintendent Ray Hoppins for his contributions to student success with the Roy E. Cope Award.
Hoppins has been an educator for 32 years, working as a teacher, vice principal, division principal, and since 2011, the Associate Superintendent.
