Temporary closures on Gaetz Avenue and Taylor Drvive start Monday

There are two significant traffic disruptions that start Monday in Red Deer.

A portion of southbound Gaetz Avenue from 34 Street to 51 Avenue will be reduced to two lanes from April 15 to April 19, 2024.

The western-most lane of southbound Gaetz Avenue will be temporarily closed as construction work is completed.

Also, Motorists are advised of an upcoming lane closure on Taylor Drive at the 43 Street intersection.

RDP receives donation to support international student-athletes

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) has received a $50,000 donation to establish the ZS Holdings 50th Anniversary International Student-Athlete Success Fund.   

The fund is aimed at supporting international student-athletes, ensuring students have the resources needed to succeed in their studies and respective sports.   

Lacombe Police Service take part in family violence training 

More than 65 members from law enforcement, victim services, and other support agencies came together for a two-day training program, in mitigating family violence.   

The program brought in experts locally and from the surrounding area, to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge to assist domestic violence victims and their families.   

Rebels lose game one in Saskatoon

The Red Deer Rebels are now down 1 game to 0 in their best-of-seven round two series against the Saskatoon Blades after losing 4-1 on Friday night.

Over 8,000 fans at the SaskTel Centre got to see why the Blades were the top team this season.

Saskatoon would get the only goal in the first period, but then it looked like the Rebels had the Blades figured out as Carson Birnie would score at the 5:29 mark in the second to tie the game up at 1-1.

Sylvan Lake student preparing for career in the skilled trades

A Sylvan Lake high school student is among the first group of students enrolled in pre-employment training for Millwrights at Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP).  

Ecole H.J. Cody School Zaland Murad Ali said he has always wanted to work in a hands-on field.  

“The reason I chose millwright specifically is because I get to learn about dealing with precision machinery and fabrication,” he said. “I like that I will get my hands dirty.”  

Fire restriction issued for County of Stettler

A fire restriction has been issued for the County of Stettler following dry weather and high wind conditions.   

The Stettler Regional Fire Department is advising residents to use extreme caution, only necessary burning will occur, always be aware of weather conditions, extinguish the fire if a change in weather increases the hazard of an open fire, ensure you have the appropriate equipment to properly extinguish a fire, and never leave a fire unattended.   

Three priorities listed in new Child Wellbeing report

In a report issued Friday, April 12th, three priorities were recommended for child wellbeing in Central Alberta.

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) and the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre (CACAC) have partnered with HelpSeeker Technologies to release a new report that looks at the current state of child wellbeing within central Alberta. The 2024 State of Child Wellbeing in Central Alberta Report explores child welfare in central Alberta, including maltreatment trends, family violence, community characteristics and data-driven insights.

RDPS board reviews draft three-year educational plan

The Red Deer Public Schools (RDPS) board of trustees was presented with the draft Three-Year Educational Plan during the April 10 meeting.   

For the upcoming school year, the board is focused on student growth and achievement, teaching and leadership, learning supports, and governance.

Lacombe County approves 2024 tax rates

Lacombe County has approved the 2024 tax rates.

In a move that aligns with its financial planning and policy commitments, Lacombe County has officially approved the tax rates for the year 2024, as outlined in the 2024 Tax Rate Bylaw. This comes after the completion of the property assessments for 2024 and the release of the year's provincial requisitions. It marks a significant moment for the County, particularly as it's the first year since the Budget Policy AD(24) approval in 2023, that the Council did not prepare a budget amendment.

Red Deer recognizes city employees with Bob Stollings Memorial Award 

The City of Red Deer is recognizing city employees, John Galbraith, Tamara Greba, and Leigh-Ann Martin with the Bob Stollings Memorial Award.  

The award is given to city employees who display outstanding performance in alignment with the city’s respect, integrity, service, and excellence (RISE) cornerstone values. 

Award nominations are submitted by city staff, detailing employee’s achievements professionally and interpersonally.
