Winning bidder of classic hockey cards looks to find owner who cares more about them

The winning bidder of more than a dozen unopened boxes of classic hockey cards uncovered in a Regina home says he's feeling remorse over his $3.7-million-dollar purchase after hearing how sad the runner-up was upon losing out.

"When I heard the runner-up bidder was literally devastated by missing out on acquiring this, I felt real empathy for him," Jack Arshawsky of Thornhill, Ont. said in an interview, adding he's hoping someone famous, perhaps even Wayne Gretzky, might be interested in taking the boxes off his hands.

First 2024 Canada carbon rebates will be deposited today for some Canadians

The first instalment of the 2024 Canada carbon rebate will be delivered to some Canadians today as long as they filed their taxes by the middle of March.

Canadians living in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and all four Atlantic provinces will receive the first of four instalments today if they filed their 2023 taxes by March 15.

Those who filed their taxes since March 15 will see their first instalment on May 15, while those who file after today will wait until June or July.

The Red Deer Hospital Lottery to provide much needed equipment for Central Albertans

The 2024 Red Deer Hospital Lottery Dream Home draw is back.

This past Friday, the show home was revealed at 16 Emmett Crescent, in Red Deer. The home built by Sorento Custom Homes features almost 2,800 feet of finished living space, four bedrooms, two and a half baths and a large covered deck. It's valued at $1,072,624.

Could we see another rail strike?

Members of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) are in the middle of a strike vote after three collective agreements expired December 31st.

The agreements include CN and CPKC engineers and conductors and the rail traffic controllers at CPKC.

The union represents about 9300 workers, including 6000 conductors, locomotive engineers, and yard workers with CN and  3200 conductors, locomotive engineers, and yard workers at CPKC, as well as the 90 rail traffic controllers with CPKC.

Expect a drastic change in weather later today

Just after 5:00 am Monday, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Red Deer, Lacombe, Ponoka, Innisfail and Stettler areas.

An abrupt change to the weather is on the way for Southern Alberta later today.

After a stretch of above average spring temperatures, a cold front will move through this afternoon and evening reaching the American border tonight. This front will usher in a cooler airmass along with rain and snow.

Rebels looking forward to playing at home after 2 losses in Saskatoon

Hopefully the Peavey Mart Centrium will be "Home Sweet Home"  for the Red Deer Rebels.

Sunday they found themselves down 2 games to 0 after a close OT loss to the Saskatoon Blades at the SaskTel Centre.

It was a defensive struggle for both teams, until the Blades would get the only goal at the halfway point of the second period.

Down 1-0 in the third, Rebels, Kalan Lind would score on power play goal assisted by Hunter Mayo and Carson Latimer. That goal would be the only score in the third which would end tied at 1-1.

Lacombe and District C of C Trade show this weekend

The 41st Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce trade show is back for another year.

Once again the event is happening at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex, featuring local businesses, market vendors, non-profit groups, and municipal services. On average the two day event will bring in around 3000 visitors to the arena.

Not only will there be a trade show, but also a pet adoption event and job hiring fair. In past years, there have been between 115-125 booths set up in the trade show, and over 80 vendors in the show's marketplace.

Temporary closures on Gaetz Avenue and Taylor Drvive start Monday

There are two significant traffic disruptions that start Monday in Red Deer.

A portion of southbound Gaetz Avenue from 34 Street to 51 Avenue will be reduced to two lanes from April 15 to April 19, 2024.

The western-most lane of southbound Gaetz Avenue will be temporarily closed as construction work is completed.

Also, Motorists are advised of an upcoming lane closure on Taylor Drive at the 43 Street intersection.

RDP receives donation to support international student-athletes

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) has received a $50,000 donation to establish the ZS Holdings 50th Anniversary International Student-Athlete Success Fund.   

The fund is aimed at supporting international student-athletes, ensuring students have the resources needed to succeed in their studies and respective sports.
