On Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 6:10 p.m., Wetaskiwin RCMP located a stolen GMC 1 ton vehicle at the Bear Hills truck stop in Bear Hills, Alta.

After determining the vehicle was stolen, responding officers requested assistance from the Alberta Real Time Operations Centre (RTOC), RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS) for a Tactical Vehicle Intervention Technique (TVIT), and deployed a Tire Deflation Device (TDD).

Over three days, April 2nd to April 5th, The City of Red Deer has played host to a high-intensity emergency exercise to help 45 central Alberta municipalities prepare for and respond to real-world emergencies.

Representatives from Red Deer County, Stettler County, Lacombe County, Kneehill County, Town of Sylvan Lake, Town of Blackfalds, and City of Red Deer participated in the exercise which was facilitated by Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) and Central Region All Hazards Incident Management Team (CRAHIMT).

Chinook’s Edge School Division has nominated Grade 3 teacher at Carstairs Elementary School Emily Wilson for the Edwin Parr Award. 

The award recognizes outstanding first-year teachers.  

The Red Deer Rebels beat the Medicine Hat Tigers 5-2 on Friday night to eliminate the Tigers 4-1 in their best-of-seven series.

Red Deer hit the road Friday night and never looked back. They scored two goals in the first period to chase the Tigers goalie out of the net after just nine shots and seven saves.

Three more unanswered Rebels goals would have the game 5-0 after 2 and half periods. Medicine Hat would get the 5200 fans going with a couple third period goals but it wasn't enough to win the game and keep the series alive.

Grant applications to support community-led initiatives in Red Deer are now open.   

The Downtown Activation 4 Seasons Grant provides financial support for community-led projects supported by local not-for-profit organizations that increase attraction to downtown. 

Total solar eclipses like the much-anticipated one taking place on Monday are usually thought of as visual experiences.

Lasting memories of the day might include a few minutes of complete darkness, prompted by the rare alignment of the sun, Earth and moon.

The highlight for others, if they're lucky enough to get their hands on a pair of special eclipse glasses to protect their eyes, could be a glimpse of a partially shadowed sun. 

Red Deer City Council discussed a chicken bylaw amendment, reviewed the 2024 Annual Policing Plan, and approved the operating budget and three-year operating plan during the April 2 regular meeting.

Residents at the Seasons Ponoka Retirement Community are working to bring joy and companionship to those living in long-term care with the Seniorosity program.  

Through the program, residents deliver vases of flowers bi-monthly to those recovering in the hospital or living in long-term care.  

Red Deer Public Schools staff had an opportunity to learn from one another’s leadership experiences during this month’s Aspiring Leaders program.  

‘Leadership Spotlight: Lessons from the Trenches’ saw a panel of eight division principals and leaders discuss lessons they have learned in their leadership journeys.
