Alberta Pulse names Dr Dengjin Bin as Alberta's Pulse Industry Innovator

The Alberta Pulse Growers (APG) have named this year's recipient of the 10th annual Alberta Pulse Industry Innovator Award. 

Each year, APG recognizes a person or organization whose progressive thinking and tireless efforts helped build Alberta’s pulse industry into the flourishing sector that it is today.

Chair Shane Strydhorst says this year's honoree is Dr DJ Bing with Agriculture and AgriFood Canada's Lacombe Research and Development Centre. 

Ottawa looks to robotics to address labor challenges in the ag sector

On Friday, the federal government announced funding for new innovative solutions to help deal with the ongoing labour challenges in the ag sector. 

Under Phase 2 of the Innovative Solutions Canada (ISC) program - Challenge Stream, five projects will each receive up to $1 million in funding.

The projects target the Canadian meat processing industry and the Canadian controlled environment agriculture industry - the concept is to advance automation and robotic technologies.

Sundre RCMP charge minor hockey volunteer with sexual assault

On March 27, 2024, Sundre RCMP were made aware of a complaint of an alleged sexual assault involving a volunteer with the Sundre Minor Hockey Association.

RCMP initiated an investigation and determined that there were four victims, all male teenagers.  

On April 5, 2024, Alexa Suitor (32), a resident of Sundre, was arrested and has been charged with the following:

Heartland Youth Center Awesome Auction donations now open 

The Heartland Youth Centre is now accepting donations for the 32nd annual Awesome Auction.   

Throughout the last three decades, there has been a wide range of items donated to the auction, including quilts, paintings, gift baskets, trips, electric bikes, and even a car.   

The auction is the major fundraiser of the Heartland Youth Center BGC of Stettler.  

Olds RCMP charge three with firearms and drug offences

On March 19, Olds RCMP received information from the public that a rural property in Mountain View County was being used as a base of operations to sell drugs and house stolen property and firearms.

After an investigation, a search warrant was obtained for the residence.

On April 3, Emergency Response Teams (North and South), and Olds RCMP, executed the search warrant.

As a result of the search warrant, the following was seized:

 

•            200 grams of suspected cocaine

•            2 grams of suspected amphetamine

New family physician practicing in Red Deer

A newly recruited family physician is now available to provide care to Red Deer residents after opening practice at Saint Mary Clinic.   

Dr. Hamid Khalefa is a fully licensed family medicine physician who has started a full-time family medicine practice here after being recruited to the community.  

He is now accepting patients and can be reached at 403-342-2234. 

 Previously, Dr. Khalefa had practiced in Chetwynd, B.C., since 2021. He received his medical education at Mansoura University in Egypt.   

Rebels ready for second round series vs Blades

After beating the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-1 in their best-of-seven series on Friday night, The Red Deer Rebels are now preparing for their next opponent, The Saskatoon Blades.

This will be the second year in a row that the two teams will meet up in the WHL Eastern Conference Semifinals. Last year the series would go to all seven games with the Blades coming out on top.

2024 Ponoka Chamber Tradeshow and Job Fair this Friday and Saturday

The 2024 Ponoka and District Chamber of Commerce Trade Show and Job Fair is coming up this Friday, April 12th and Saturday April 13th.

The annual show will once again take place at the Ponoka Arena Complex (4410-54th Street).

The show will run Friday from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm.

As always it's a chance to check out the Ponoka and area local products and services. This year will also be a chance for job seekers, as local employers will be on site at the job fair taking your resumes and applications.

Road closures to start Monday in Red Deer

Two separate road closures have been scheduled to start Monday, April 8th in Red Deer.

The first will be on 50th street between 42nd Avenue and 43rd Avenue. 

City crews are working on water main replacement in that area. The work is expected to last until Wednesday, April 10th.

The second road closure will be on 47th Avenue between 53rd and 55th Street.

A portion of 47 Avenue between 53 Street and 55 Street will be closed to northbound traffic as construction crews replace underground infrastructure.
