Canada condemns Israeli strike on aid workers in Gaza, demands investigation

Canada condemned an Israeli airstrike that killed seven aid workers in the Gaza Strip on Monday and is demanding a full investigation.

The World Central Kitchen said a dual Canadian-American citizen, as well as three British nationals, an Australian, a Polish national and a Palestinian were delivering food that had arrived by sea when they were struck Monday evening. 

The charity suspended operations in the region following the attack. World Central Kitchen was founded by celebrity chef José Andrés and operates in several countries wracked by wars or natural disasters.

Lacombe County to host voluntary Farm Vehicle Safety checks on April 3 and April 4

Lacombe County is doing a two-day voluntary farm vehicle safety check event, taking place at the Rainy Creek (April 3) and Tees (April 4) satellite public works shops. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the safety and awareness within the agricultural industry, while also promoting ‘Vision Zero’—a key component of the Lacombe County Traffic Safety Plan.

Central Albertans invited to watch partial solar eclipse

The Kerry Wood Nature Centre is inviting families to a partial solar eclipse party on Monday (April 8).  

“We have this perfect alignment of the sun, the moon, and the Earth so if you are in exactly the right spot, you will see the moon cover up the sun in the middle of the day,” Alice Koning, Kerry Wood Nature Centre Community Outreach Coordinator said.  

Indigenous students to learn and connect at conference

More than 60 Indigenous youth from Red Deer Public Schools (RDPS) will take part in a conference this month that allows them to learn, connect, and be inspired by Indigenous leaders in the community. 

The third annual Inspiring Success Youth Conference will take place on April 11 at Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Arts Centre.

ASIRT investigating custody death in Red Deer

On March 25, 2024, at 10:56 p.m., Red Deer RCMP were dispatched to a residence on 50 Ave for complaints of a man acting erratically and running onto the roadway. Upon arrival, the suspect was identified by police, arrested and transported to the Red Deer detachment.

While lodging into cells, the male appeared to be in medical distress and EMS was requested. Upon EMS arrival, he became unresponsive. Life-saving measures and CPR were initiated and the man was transported to the Red Deer Regional Hospital where he was being monitored in the ICU.

CN reports rail car movement has been steady

Over the last few weeks, we've seen grain shipments picking up in the Prairies. 

CN's Assistant Vice-President of Grain David Przednowek says they saw fairly consistent grain movement for March with demand picking up.

"CN shipped over 530,000 tons of grain and processed grain products out of the country in grain week #34. That's slightly below supply chain targets, but very similar to the average of the past three years for that specific week."
