How to protect your home against theft this spring

As we enter the spring and summer seasons, the Alberta RCMP want to urge homeowners to consider Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles when planning their home renovations and seasonal maintenance projects.

CPTED is a set of design principles that aim to reduce opportunities for crime to take place. Making recommended adjustments to a home or business can deter criminals by making it more difficult or less desirable to commit the crime. It can also make you feel safer.

Big men put on a big show in Red Deer

The first professional show for Alberta's Strongest Man was held Saturday in Red Deer. 

Spectators bundled up in hats, mitts, extra layers, and chairs to witness the feats of strength as the competitors vied for the title of Strongest Man in Alberta. The event took place at Fire & Flood Emergency Services Ltd., where Dan Hagan was crowned the champion after competing in the events.

Alberta government earmarks $25 million to evaluate 20 rural health care facilities in 2025/26

Alberta’s government is investing roughly $330 million over three years to support health capital projects in rural communities across the province.

If passed, Budget 2025 will provide $15 million to support project planning, which includes conducting facility and functional assessments of rural hospitals to determine what capital planning solutions and services are required to maximize each facility’s potential.

Blackfalds RCMP respond to neighbour dispute involving firearm

The Blackfalds RCMP Detachment received 118 calls for service between March 18 and March 24. 

The calls included one assault, five breach of peace, two break and enters into a business, one criminal harassment, three mischiefs, four thefts, three thefts of motor vehicles, and eight motor vehicle collisions.

The City of Red Deer’s Automated Traffic Enforcement Program will be operating throughout the month of April.

Weekly green cart collection begins today in Red Deer

To prepare for an increase in seasonal yard waste, the City of Red Deer is shifting back to weekly green cart collections starting today (March 31).  

Spring yard work often means additional organic material.  

Residents are reminded that if their green cart is full, extra yard waste can be set out along with their full green cart for collection.

ADVERTISING/PUBLIC NOTIFICATION BYLAW

Council approved first reading of Bylaw No. 1433/25, the Advertising/Public Notification Bylaw. The proposed amendments aim to expand alternative advertising methods to enhance public awareness. A public hearing is scheduled for April 24, 2025, commencing at 9:00 a.m. in the Lacombe County Council Chambers.

Three measles cases in Central Alberta

Alberta Health Services is reporting three confirmed cases of measles in Central Alberta and a total of 21 across the province as of Friday afternoon.

The northern region has the highest number of cases with nine. Edmonton is reporting four cases, Calgary has two, and there are three cases in the south.

All but one of the cases are in children under 18 years of age.

The best protection against measles is to ensure you are up to date with your immunizations.

Wranglers look to ride playoff success into provincial tournament

After capturing the HJHL Championship last week, the Sylvan Lake Wranglers will be competing in the Alberta Junior B Provincial tournament in Morinville.

For the Wranglers, it was their first HJHL title since 2010 and first championship since moving to Sylvan Lake. Sylvan Lake only lost one game during their playoff run.
