Penhold Municipal Census starts Monday

The 2024 Municipal Census begins April 1 and continues until June 30.

The Town of Penhold uses census data to plan for public services and infrastructure such as schools, roads, recreational facilities, fire and CPO services, and libraries.

Basing planning decisions on recently updated demographics results in more appropriate use of revenue and resources. Collecting up-to-date population data is an important and effective way to plan for the needs of a growing and diverse community.

Dog named 'Hero' kept stuck owner warm and safe from coyotes for 2 days: police

A dog called Hero lived up to his name earlier this week after spending two days by his stranded master's side, keeping his owner warm and even fending off coyotes while the man waited to be rescued from a muddy ditch in southern Alberta.

The dog's bravery and devotion have earned widespread plaudits online and prompted one local animal rescue organization to raise money to cover vet bills for Hero and other pets inadvertently drawn into the 48-hour saga.

The consumer levy affects individuals, small and medium-sized businesses, First Nations, as well as public-sector operations such as hospitals, universities, schools and municipalities.

Red Deer RCMP seek public’s assistance in locating missing family

On Sunday, March 31st, Red Deer RCMP were requesting the public’s assistance with locating the Patterson family. The family of consisting of a 35-year-old Amanda Lillian Patterson, 8-year-old Nash Eli Patterson had been last seen on March 15, 2024, in the Red Deer area.

RCMP have now confirmed that the missing mother and child have been located safe.

Rebels ready to come back home after splitting series in Medicine Hat

The Red Deer Rebels are coming home after splitting their WHL round-one series at 1 game apiece with the Medicine Hat Tigers.

After a dramatic 5-4 win in second overtime on Friday night, the Red Deer Rebels and Medicine Hat Tigers went at it again for game two on Saturday.

Unfortunately, for the road team it was a much different result. The Tigers would set the tone of the game very early with a goal just 21 seconds into the first period. Two more goals for Medicine Hat in the middle frame, would put the game out of reach. 

RDPS student takes home first place in Braille Challenge

A Red Deer Public Schools (RDPS) Grade 7 student, Brynn Larsen, took home first place in this year’s Alberta Regional Braille Challenge.  

The Braille Challenge is a national reading and writing contest that helps promote the importance of Braille literacy skills among students with vision loss.  

Larsen and nearly 50 students competed in three categories, including spelling, reading comprehension, and proofreading.   

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools Ratifies Mediator’s Recommendations

The Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools Board of Trustees met on March 28, 2024, and voted in favour of the mediator’s recommendations.

“After carefully considering the mediator’s recommendations, received on March 22, 2024, the Board of Trustees successfully ratified the recommendations. Moving forward, the Division will continue working with our highly valued teachers to deliver programs and services for our students and communities,” said Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools Vice-Chair Dorraine Lonsdale on March 28.

Suspect arrested in fatal hit and run

Innisfail RCMP advise that they have located the truck and suspected driver in the fatal hit and run incident that happened east of Innisfail on Highway 590 on March 28th. 

EMS and RCMP located a deceased male in the south ditch of Highway 590. Investigation has revealed that the male victim was dressed in black clothing and was walking Westbound on Highway 590. He was last seen alive walking on the highway at approximately 6:30 a.m...  Between 6:30am and 8:09am he was struck by a vehicle that was believed to be travelling East on Highway 590.
