Lacombe Generals are the 2024 Vanberg Cup Champions

The Lacombe AA Generals are the 2024 North Central Hockey League (NCHL) Vanberg Cup Champions.

In front of 625 home fans at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex, the Generals were able to raise the cup after a 4-3 overtime win over the Devon Barons.

Saturday night's game went back and forth between the teams who exchanged goals in all three periods. After the third frame the game was tied at 3 apiece.

In OT it was Cam Maclise from Jamie Johnson with the championship winning goal.

Sundre High students test drive health care careers

Sundre High students who are interested in a career in health care got to experience a variety of possible health care roles.   

During a health care skills day on March 13, about 40 students got to learn about airway intubation, cardiac treatment, x-ray lab technician work, suturing, pharmacy, emergency medical services (EMS), and dental hygiene.  

Red Deer Rebels to play Medicine Hat in the first round of the playoffs

The Red Deer Rebels and Medicine Hat Tigers will meet in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals for round one of the 2024 WHL Playoffs.

The Rebels earned the #5 seed in the Eastern Conference while the Tigers claimed the #4 seed and home-ice advantage for the opening round of playoffs.

This marks the seventh time overall and first since 2015 that Red Deer and Medicine Hat will meet in postseason play. The Tigers won five of the previous six series.

RCMP Major Crimes Unit investigates homicide in Red Deer

On March 21, 2024, at 3:51 p.m. Red Deer RCMP received a report of a shooting that occurred at an apartment building on Parke Avenue in Red Deer.

As officers arrived, a suspect was observed running from the area. After a short foot pursuit, the man was arrested and a firearm seized. A second male suspect was also located near the scene and arrested.

Other officers arriving on scene located a deceased person who has been identified as 54-year-old Red Deer resident Jason Cory Worobec.

Generals win pushes Barons to the brink

The Lacombe AA Generals have a chance to be sipping champagne from the NCHL Vanberg Cup tonight at home.

In front of 550 hometown fans at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex, the Gens beat the Barons 5-1 Friday night. With the win, Lacombe now leads their best-of-seven series 3 games to 1.

Fans watched as there was no scoring until around the 14:00 mark of the second period with a goal from Cam Maclise.

4-H Canada is going through some key changes

4-H Canada has been forced to reorganize its operations after Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada cut their support to the national youth development program by 35 percent, resulting in the layoff of seven staff members last week.

Interim CEO Hugh Maynard says over the last ten years, 4-H Canada has received plus or minus $1,000,000 in funding from Agriculture Canada.

Some of that money (it varies from year to year) is considered flow-through money, 4-H Canada receives it and then distributes it to the provincial organizations for their programming.

Search warrants result in drug arrest

Wetaskiwin Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) began an investigation on drug trafficking within the community in January 2024. On March 21, 2024, Wetaskiwin CRU executed two search warrants resulting in the seizure of:

  • 450 grams of methamphetamine;
  • 56 grams of cocaine;
  • 6 grams of crack; and
  • $420 cash.

As a result of the investigation Kenneth Croxall (54), a resident of Wetaskiwin, has been charged with:

RCMP warning of new text message scam

Red Deer RCMP are warning about a new text message scam involving speeding violation tickets.

Red Deer RCMP, along with other police agencies, have received reports of a new scam that is circulating throughout Canada. The scam involves the victim receiving a text message stating that their vehicle has been detected exceeding the speed limit and has a link to a website to pay a ticket. Do not click on the link and do not make any payments to the website.
