RDCRS recognized by Parkland Regional Safety Committee for dedication to safety

The Parkland Regional Safety Committee (PRSC) awarded Lisa Vogt of Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) recently retired Health and Safety Manager, with the 2024 Long Service Award on March 18.  

Vogt received the award in recognition of her unwavering commitment and invaluable contributions to the PRSC over many years of service.   

Five RDP athletes recognized by ACAC

Five student-athletes from the Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Kings and Queens Hockey teams have been recognized by the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) for their impactful play during the 2023/2024 season.

Red Deer’s Avery Lajeunesse and Stettler’s Kyla Hansel have made the ACAC Women’s Hockey First All-Conference team. Jacob Wozney was selected to the ACAC Men’s Hockey First All-Conference team. Chance Longjohn and Tanner Sklaruk were named to the ACAC Men’s Hockey Second All-Conference team.

The Canada Grains Act Summit is taking place today

The grain sector is coming together in Saskatoon to discuss the Canada Grain Act.

The summit is being hosted by the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission.

APAS President Ian Boxall says the Canada Grain Act Summit is an opportunity to discuss key issues, innovations, regulations, and competitiveness within the grain sector.

He says they've invited 40 organizations to attend with producer groups, researchers, stakeholders and government officials both Federal and Provincial.

Ottawa increases interest-free portion of the Advance Payments Program to $250,000

Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay is raising the interest free limit on the 2024 Advance Payments Program.

The Advance Payments Program gives producers access to cash advances of up to $1 million, with the first $250 thousand dollars now being interest free.

He says in the face of so many challenges, our hardworking producers continue to show their resilience and produce top-quality products for Canadians, and the world.

Local entrepreneurs showcase ideas at Catalyst Incubator celebration event

Last week, 10 Red Deer entrepreneurs took the podium in front of local business leaders to showcase their ideas during the Catalyst Incubator celebration event on March 21.   

The Catalyst Incubator program was designed by the Central Alberta Regional Innovation Network (CARIN) to assist local entrepreneurs move from an idea to export in a faster, seamless way.  

Delburne Outlaws win U-15 Provincials

The Delburne Outlaws are the U-15 Provincial Champions.

After beating the Trails West Wolves (Calgary) team in triple overtime early Sunday morning in the semi-finals, Delburne then went on to face the Beiseker Blazers in the finals.

Marley Magyar would score the only goal in the first period for the host team.

In the second period it was a back-and-forth frame as both teams would exchange goals to end the period tied at 3 goals apiece. Delburne would get scoring from Maxx Russell and Kai Tucker.

Red Deer by-election nominations close today

Today is nomination day for the 2024 Red Deer municipal by-election, and staff are on site at city hall to accept nomination packages until noon. 

Starting today, eligible voters can apply for a Special Ballot to participate in the by-election.  

Special Ballots will be mailed to voters or be made available for pickup and must be returned to the office of the Returning Officer no later than 4:30 p.m. on Election Day. 

County of Stettler Deputy Reeve appointed as ASCHA President

The County of Stettler extends heartfelt congratulations to Council member and current Deputy Reeve, James Nibourg for his recent appointment as the President of the Alberta Seniors and Community House Association (ASCHA). Deputy Reeve Nibourg brings a wealth of experience and dedication to this important role.

Sylvan Lake FCSS offers new transportation program

Sylvan Lake Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) has started a new transportation program for residents living in town.

The new program called Zoomers offers free door-to-door transportation service for older adults, adults with physical challenges, and caregivers with children 0-18.

Zoomers runs on Mondays and Wednesdays to grocery shops or some specialty stores when time permits. 

Wendy Prediger a link worker with the FCSS says it's more than just a transportation program.

Prevent identity theft with free document shredding this Wednesday

This Wednesday, March 27, between 12:00pm and 04:00pm, Red Deer RCMP Youth and Community Action Team (YCAT) will be on location at Carnival Cinemas for their annual 'Shred It' event.

March is Fraud Prevention Month and to help combat the issue of identify fraud, Red Deer RCMP are hosting a ‘Shred It’ event, which is a safe and convenient way to securely dispose of your documents. By not shredding important documents before you throw them out, identity thieves can use those details to sign up for things like credit cards or passports under stolen persona.
