Mark Carney to be sworn in as Canada's 24th prime minister Friday

Mark Carney will be sworn in as Canada's 24th prime minister at a ceremony at Rideau Hall Friday after the formal resignation of Justin Trudeau.

Gov. Gen. Mary Simon, who will preside over the event, announced late Wednesday the swearing-in ceremony for Carney and his new cabinet will take place at 11 a.m. ET in the Rideau Hall ballroom. 

Carney, who was selected as Liberal leader Sunday in a landslide vote, has promised a "seamless" and "quick" transition.

Emergency rail crossing repairs to cause detours Thursday and Friday

CP Rail will be conducting emergency repairs on Range Road 26-4 (34th Street) at Highway 2A starting on Thursday, March 13 and continuing into Friday, March 14 (see map for details).

Work is scheduled from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

Detours will be in effect during this time. Please drive with caution in these areas, and ensure you watch for and obey posted signage.

École Olds High School student nominated for an Honouring Spirit Award

Rayna Scott has been on a journey to learn more about her Indigenous heritage. That journey has been evident to the staff members at École Olds High School and is why they nominated her for an Honouring Spirit Award.

“My biological father, who I never met, is Métis,” says Rayna Scott, “but I didn’t know that until a few years ago. Being Métis means a lot to me and has increased my sense of pride in myself.”

Premier Smith to pursue a "primarily diplomatic approach" to dealing with U.S. officials in regards to tariffs

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith issued a statement following discussions related to tariffs at Wednesday's Council of the Federation (COF) meeting.

“We had a very frank and healthy conversation around the COF table today about various approaches to dealing with the unjustifiable U.S. tariffs, and the critical importance of respecting provincial jurisdiction over provincial resources," she said.

Rebels earn hard fought victory in Swift Current

The Red Deer Rebels kept their slim playoff hopes alive Wednesday night with a 3-2 win in Swift Current.

The victory prevented the Broncos from clinching the final playoff spot in the WHL Eastern Conference.

The Rebels stormed out to a 3-0 lead midway through the game with goals by Jaxon Fuder, Doogan Pederson, and Brett Calhoon.

Swift Current put up a fight in the second half with goals by Otto Hanson and Clarke Caswell but it wasn't enough as Red Deer pulled out the 3-2 victory.

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools cancels rural bus service due to weather conditions

Due to weather conditions, rural school bus service has been cancelled for Thursday, March 13, for the Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools. 

This cancellation affects Rocky Mountain House routes S56, S57, and S58, serving St. Dominic and St. Matthew Schools.

Schools remain open.

New poll suggests 40% of Canadians fear losing their jobs due to Trump's tariffs

A new poll suggests that 40 per cent of Canadians are worried about losing their jobs as many businesses scale back hiring plans in response to the trade war with the United States.

The Leger poll, which sampled more than 1,500 Canadian adults from March 7 to March 10, suggests that more than half of workers in Ontario were concerned about job security, the highest in the country, while just under one in four in Atlantic Canada said they were worried.

G7 foreign ministers start talks in Quebec, as Joly pushes back on U.S. coercion

A major foreign-policy summit is underway in Quebec today, with the Liberals welcoming foreign ministers from the U.S., Europe and Japan.

The Group of Seven ministerial meeting is taking place in the Charlevoix region, just as Canada seeks support against damaging American tariffs.

The leaders are set to discuss the functioning of the G7 today, as well as geopolitical challenges ranging from Haiti to Sudan.

Ukraine is expected to loom large over the meetings, with Kyiv saying it would be willing to accept a ceasefire if Russia agrees to certain conditions.
