Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney dead at 84

There was no in-between with Martin Brian Mulroney.

Canadians loved him: In 1984, they handed the youthful charmer a blank cheque and the largest majority mandate in history so he could change the country.

Canadians hated him: When he announced his departure from politics in 1993, his charm was dismissed as blarney, his youth faded into a lugubrious middle-age.

He entered the job with massive support; he left with the lowest approval rating in the history of polling.

Moisture concerns discussed during Top Crop Summit

A number of areas across the prairies are looking for more moisture.

Nutrien's Senior Agronomist Lyle Cowell took part in the Top Crop Summit this week noting that any moisture we see now will be beneficial.

He says depending where you are in Western Canada, quite a bit of what we get from here on in is going to largely lead to runoff.

CFA delegates push politicians on key ag issues

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture holding its Annual General Meeting this week in Ottawa.

President Keith Curry says this year's theme is 'Seizing Opportunities: Canada's growing role on the world stage'. 

During the first day of the event, the politicians addressed the group.

Lacombe Fire Department preparing for Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge 

Members of the Lacombe Fire Department are preparing to climb Calgary’s tallest tower, Brookfield Place, to raise funds for individuals and their families living with cancer.   

The Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge highlights the risk first responders take when responding to calls, while also supporting Wellspring Alberta programs and services for firefighters and citizens living with cancer. 

Wilkinson says no carbon rebates for Saskatchewan after province says it won't remit

The federal natural resources minister says Saskatchewan residents won’t get a carbon rebate, after the province announced it would stop remitting the levy on natural gas to Ottawa.

Jonathan Wilkinson says the province’s move hurts lower income families in Saskatchewan, who would get more in the rebates than they pay in the levies.

Premier Scott Moe had announced the province’s gas utility would stop collecting the carbon price from customers in January, and the province had until Thursday to remit those dollars.

Delburne athlete awarded for sportsmanship while representing Team Canada     

Delburne curler, Kaylee Raniseth, was recognized for her sportsmanship during the World Junior Curling Championships in Finland.  

Throughout the event, teams voted for specific athletes who deserved the World Curling Junior Sportsmanship Award, based on who showed the best sportsmanship, who was kind to other teams, and who played fairly.  

Former world junior hockey players charged with sexual assault choose jury trial

Five former members of Canada's world junior hockey team who are charged with sexual assault in a 2018 incident in London, Ont., have chosen to be tried by a jury.

Dillon Dube, Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Cal Foote and Alex Formenton were charged with sexual assault last month. McLeod is also facing an additional charge of sexual assault for "being a party to the offence."

Red Deer RCMP warn public of smart key emulators

Red Deer RCMP wish to warn the public on the use of smart key emulators in vehicle thefts.

A Smart Key Emulator is a device that allows you to create (emulate) a key for certain car models without using or having the original smart key. After emulating the key, the device can open and close the doors, the trunk, as well as start the engine at anytime, over an infinite amount of times.

The emulator takes over the basic functions of the original smart key and essentially becomes the smart key.

Sylvan Lake RCMP recognize youth for bravery   

A Sylvan Lake youth was recognized by the RCMP for his brave actions when a man attempted to steal a vehicle he was inside.  

On Jan. 26, RCMP responded to a report of an attempted stolen vehicle with a youth in the backseat.  

With the help of the youth and his mother, RCMP found and arrested the suspect nearby, without harm to the public.
