Olds College appoints new Board Chair

Olds College of Agriculture and Technology has appointed Al Kemmere as the Chair of the Olds College Board of Governors by the Government of Alberta’s Ministry of Advanced Education.    

Kemmere, appointed as a public member of the Board in March 2023 and Interim Chair in February 2024, brings extensive experience and expertise in the agri-food sector, public service, governance, and educational leadership to the institution.   

Canada, other countries struggling to come up with new rules for AI and copyright

The battle between AI companies and copyright holders notched an early win for publishers in the U.S. in mid-February when a court ruled that a legal research firm didn't have the right to use a rival's content.

But even as the number of legal cases grows, a definite answer to the question of whether artificial intelligence companies can use copyrighted content to train their AI products is still a long way off.

Canadian Ukrainian community 'shocked' and 'angry' at Zelenskyy's treatment

Leaders from Canadian Ukrainian organizations say they are shocked by Friday's clash between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and they are warning this heated exchange should serve as a wake-up call for Canada. 

Trump berated Zelenskyy for being “disrespectful” in an Oval Office meeting, then abruptly called off the signing of a minerals deal that Trump said would have moved Ukraine closer to ending its war with Russia.

Update: Heavy police presence ended in Red Deer, suspect arrested

On March 1, the Red Deer RCMP responded to a report of an unknown male who entered a backyard and stole a vehicle. 

A  heavy police presence advisory was issued while officers searched for the suspect. 

The following morning, police received another report of a break and enter where a vehicle was stolen.  

Officers located the suspect, 28-year-old Jordan Bell-Blowers of Red Deer, who has been charged with the following offences:

Bake Sale fundraiser on today in support of Central Alberta Humane Society

The Central Alberta Humane Society is inviting Central Albertans with a sweet tooth to stop by the annual Sweet Bake Sale today (March 1).  

The one-day bake sale from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the shelter (4505 – 77th Street Red Deer) will feature a variety of sweet treats from local businesses and home bakers.  

Sunny celebrates Classroom of the Month with Lacombe Grade 1 & 2 class

Sunny celebrated February's Classroom of the Month with a trip to Madame Doyon's Grade 1 & 2 split class at École James S. McCormick School in Lacombe on Feb. 28.

The class was super excited to meet Sunny and was treated to lunch from Boston Pizza.

Each student also received a prize bag which was filled up with gifts from local sponsors, including a pair of tickets to a Blackfalds Bulldogs game.

School mascot Swifty also joined in on the fun!

Blackfalds hosting Indoor Rowing Championships this weekend

Competitors from across the province are expected to take part in the Alberta Indoor Rowing Championships on Saturday, March 1 at the Abbey Centre in Blackfalds.

This year marks the 20th year that the Central Alberta Rowing Club has hosted the event.

President Andy Nokes explained that the competitors will be racing on 15 gym rowing machines. There are also 25 warm-up machines onsite.

Generals bounce Eagles in three straight to advance to finals

The Lacombe Generals have punched their ticket to the North Central Senior AA Hockey League finals with a 3-2 win over Stony Plain Friday night in front of 400 fans at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex.

The Generals swept the best-of-five second round in three straight.

The Eagles opened the scoring early in the second when Jordan Ceh found the back of the net.

Rebels edge Hitmen in shootout

The Red Deer Rebels got back in the win column Friday night at the Centrium pulling out a 2-1 shootout win against Calgary.

The Rebels have now beat Calgary four times this season.

After a scoreless first period, Calgary's Rylan Ng opened the scoring 6:34 into the second tipping in a shot from Kalem Parker.

Red Deer would answer later in the period when Derek Thurston blasted a long-range shot past Hitmen rookie goalie Anders Miller.

Get your free Brandon Hagel bobblehead at Saturday's Rebels game

One of the greatest players in Red Deer Rebels history and member of Team Canada is being honoured with his very own bobblehead.

The Rebels have announced that Brandon Hagel Bobblehead Night takes place Saturday, March 1 when the Kelowna Rockets visit the Westerner Park Centrium.

These limited edition bobbleheads will be given to the first 1,400 fans through the doors for the game. 

Draw tickets will be given to the next 500 fans for a chance to win one of the remaining 100 bobbleheads.
