Supreme Court of Canada says a computer's IP address deserves privacy protection

The Supreme Court of Canada says police need judicial authorization to obtain a computer's internet protocol address, calling the identification number a crucial link between a person and their online activity.

The top court's 5-4 ruling came Friday in a case that began in 2017, when Calgary police investigated fraudulent online transactions from a liquor store.

The store's third-party payment processor voluntarily gave police two IP addresses — numerical identifiers assigned by an internet service provider.

Snowfall warning issued for Central Alberta

Just before 4:00 pm on Friday 1 March 2024, Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for many parts of Central Alberta. 

Heavy snow will begin overnight tonight bringing total amounts of 10 to 15 cm. Heavy snow will taper off Saturday morning before another area of heavy snow moves into the area Saturday afternoon.

The heaviest snow is expected to fall in areas east of Highway 21. The snowfall will taper off by Sunday morning. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

Temporary road closure to start Monday in Red Deer

The City of Red Deer is notifying drivers of a temporary road closure on 55 Street between 44 Avenue and 45 Avenue as crews repair underground utilities in the area.

Starting at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, (March 4), 55 Street will be closed between 44 Avenue and 45 Avenue until approximately 4 p.m. on Tuesday, (March 5).

Detours will be in place for the duration of the closure, but drivers and pedestrians should expect delays.

Those in the area are reminded to obey directional signage and give crews room to complete their work. 

Sundre RCMP investigate fatal motor vehicle collision

On Feb. 29, at approximately 3:20 p.m., the Sundre RCMP were notified of a motor vehicle collision on Highway 587, between Range Road 44 and Range Road 45. 

The collision was between a semi truck and a passenger vehicle. 

When police arrived, it was determined that the driver of the passenger vehicle, a 26-year-old female resident of Caroline, was deceased. 

FCSS needing your help with Meals on Wheels

Over the past few weeks our Sunny 94 team has been helping out with the Lacombe and District FCSS Meals on Wheels Program. It is something that we have been doing for almost 15 years.

On average there are between 10-15 meals delivered daily in Lacombe. The food is picked up at the Lacombe Senior Citizen's Lodge.

Not only is it delivering food but also a daily check on some of Lacombe's older residents, and a chance for social interaction.

State funeral, public condolences being planned for Brian Mulroney

The flag on Parliament's Peace Tower fluttered at half-mast Friday morning as Canadians paid tribute to former prime minister Brian Mulroney.

"Canada is in mourning," said Liberal House leader Steve MacKinnon inside a sombre House of Commons, where a book of condolences has been set up for members of Parliament to sign.

Mulroney died Thursday in a Florida hospital following a recent fall at his Palm Beach home. He was 84. He had been treated for prostate cancer almost a year ago and underwent a heart procedure in August.

Red Deer RCMP Crime Reduction Team arrest pair in stolen vehicle

Early in the new year, the Red Deer RCMP Crime Reduction Team (CRT) laid charges following an investigation into the theft of a motor vehicle. 

On Jan. 2, CRT were conducting patrols when officers located two individuals in a vehicle that had been stolen out of Red Deer the day prior. Officers arrested both suspects. 

Innisfail police vehicle rammed by impaired drug dealer during traffic stop

On Feb. 27, around 1 a.m., Innisfail RCMP received a report of a possible impaired driver passed out in his vehicle near the Innisfail School.   

Police located the vehicle which was running and in gear. The driver was passed out in the driver seat, and when woke up, took his foot off the brake and immediately crashed into a police vehicle. Police arrested the driver for impaired driving.  

The were no injuries and limited damage. 

Planned power outages for Downtown area of Olds and Maskwacis Friday morning

Fortis Alberta has announced that there is a planned outage for some areas of The Town of Olds for Friday, March 1st.

This outage will run until about 11:00 am.

Fortis says that they are doing PPO-maintenance and that the restoration is now in progress.

Watch for any traffic lights that may not be working, and treat the intersections as a four-way stop.

Fortis has also announced a planned power outage in the Maswacis area for Friday.

This outage will run until around 10:30.
