Why should nitrogen get all the buzz?

A successful canola crop needs a lot of nitrogen, which is why nitrogen earns A-list buzz. That same successful crop also depends on a strong supporting cast – phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and micronutrients.

University of Saskatchewan researchers recently updated the nutrient uptake and removal guidelines for 14 annual crops grown in Western Canada. The researchers, in doing their surveys, discovered considerable variability in uptake and removal due in part to differences in weather and management, which is why they say these numbers are guidelines only, not prescriptions. 

Millennials outnumber baby boomers for first time: Statistics Canada

Statistics Canada says there are now more millennials than baby boomers in the country, ending the 65-year reign of the post-Second World War generation as the largest cohort in the population.

The federal agency noted the change in its population estimate for July 1, 2023, broken down by age and gender released today.

The average age in Canada dropped slightly between July 1, 2022 and July 1, 2023 for the first time since 1958.

However, Statistics Canada says the number and proportion of people aged 65 years and older have continued to rise.

RD County Mayor to move Council forward with Governance Review Implementation Plan

At the February 20, council meeting, Red Deer County Council endorsed the Governance Review Implementation Plan that was conducted by George B. Cuff & Associates. The implementation plan aims to address all recommendations outlined in the governance audit, with the overall goal of re-establishing respectful dialogue both in and outside Council Chambers and the County Office.

Ponoka student named the RDP Athlete of the Week

Autumn Roos, a 3rd year Bachelor of Education Middle Years student, has been named the Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Athlete of the Week.

Roos,  who is from Ponoka,  helped the RDP Volleyball Queens earn a four set win over the Olds College Broncos by scoring 17 points. She also accumulated 10 kills, four service aces, three digs, three blocks and one assist.

Red Deer Public Schools staff learn about new leadership model

During February's Aspiring Leaders session, Red Deer Public Schools staff learned about the leadership tool, working genius. 

On Feb. 8, approximately 60 staff from all employee groups joined Corrine Thorsteinson, Certified Facilitator and Associate Superintendent of People Services as she presented the material based on “The Six Types of Working Genius Model” by Patrick Lencioni.  

Sylvan Lake Advanced Ambulatory Care Service closed all day Tuesday

Due to a sudden and unexpected gap in physician coverage, the Sylvan Lake Advanced Ambulatory Care Service (SLAACS) will be temporarily closed all day Tuesday, February 20 (from 7:30 a.m. until 10 p.m.) Normal business hours will resume Wednesday, February 21 at 7:30 a.m.

Patients arriving at the Sylvan Lake Community Health Centre to receive care from SLAACS during a closure will be redirected to other available care options as appropriate to their needs.

ACAC regular season nearing an end for some RDP teams

It was another busy weekend for most of the RDP Athletic teams.

Starting with hockey, The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team split its weekend series with the NAIT Ooks.The Kings and Queens Hockey squads will wrap up the regular season next weekend.

On the courts, The RDP Basketball and Volleyball teams completed regular season competition on the road.

Both Volleyball squads earned victories in Olds.

The Queens Basketball team picked up a win and loss while the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team dropped a pair of games.
