Rocky Mountain House to hold By-election on February 26

The Town of Rocky Mountain House is looking to fill one vacant councillor position with a by-election on Februay 26, 2024.

The last day to file a nomination is Monday, January 29th, 2024 at noon.

Advanced voting will take place on February 8th and 24th. Election day is February 26th. 

All Canadian citizens, 18 year of age or older, who have resided within the Town of Rocky Mountain House for at least six months prior to nomination day can run.

Over 100 pharmacy care clinics to operate across the province

By the end of 2024, there will be 103 Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacy care clinics in Alberta, increasing the number of clinics by 44 in the province. The expansion represents a $77-million investment by the Canadian pharmacy retailer into the province.

Premier Smith said that the expansion will help alleviate the burden on the province's healthcare system.

AJHL provides new statement, cancelling more games

The Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) have made another statement following the announcement that five teams have decided to join the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) over the weekend. These teams that have decided to join the BCHL for the 2024-2025 season include the Blackfalds Bulldogs, Brooks Bandits, Okotoks Oilers, Sherwood Park Crusaders, and the Spruce Grove Saints.  

The announcement includes some game cancellations for the league.  

Council approves of grant to support another Lacombe Days Concert

The City of Lacombe has approved of another grant to support a second Lacombe Days Concert in 2024.  

Council approved a $30,000 grant from the Community Builder Partnership Fund to the Lacombe Days Committee for their proposed 2024 Lacombe Days Concert. The concert is part of the Lacombe Days festival, a three-day community celebration.  

CCA is closely watching what's happening south of the border with the proposed voluntary' Product of the U.S. Labeling

The Canadian Cattle Association has been actively working on some key issues of concern for producers here at home, in the U.S. and internationally.

The CCA's general manager Ryder Lee says they're closely monitoring what's happening south of the border with their 'voluntary' Product of the U.S. Labeling legislation. 

He says they're watching to see if it changes how cattle are procured or beef is sold.

Red Deer RCMP Crime Reduction Team Arrest Prolific Offenders

On Dec. 14, 2023, the Red Deer RCMP Crime Reduction Team (CRT) arrested and charged two males following a stolen property investigation.

Red Deer RCMP CRT observed a suspicious vehicle attend two separate businesses within Red Deer and steal wheels off vehicles at these businesses. RCMP were able to stop and arrest the two males from the suspicious car. During the arrest, one of the suspects threw a backpack, which police recovered. The backpack contained multiple cell phones, cash, and drugs.

Bower Ponds to light up the night this Thursday

Bower Ponds Recreation is inviting families to make lasting memories on the ice during the annual Glow Night Skate Party this Thursday (Jan. 25). 

From 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., the rink at Bower Ponds will come alive with entertainment by DJ Cau5e, vibrant LED lights, and a variety of glow sticks. 

Inside the Bower Ponds Pavilion skaters can enjoy snacks and hot chocolate and choose from a selection of glow sticks.

As the Government of Alberta works to refocus the healthcare system, engagement sessions are being held across the province. Four of 40 engagement sessions will be held in the central Alberta area.

Skaters battle harsh conditions for Jeremy Wotherspoon Long Track Meet

Speed skaters from across Alberta raced at Setters Place Oval at Great Chief Park in Red Deer over the weekend (January 20 and 21) for the Annual Jeremy Wotherspoon Long Track meet.  

Youth aged 11-13 raced to qualify Canadian Youth Long Track Championships in Quebec City from February 9-11. However, skaters of all ages were present for the event. The Neo Juniors held Olympic Style Races in 500m, 1,000m, and 3,000m quads.  

Lots of potential in the pulse market for 2024

The pulse market has been relatively strong compared to most other crops.

That was the message Jonathan Driedger with Leftfield Commodity Research delivered to pulse growers this week during the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers Regional Meeting in Swift Current.

Driedger told the group online and in person that while the pulse market has been doing well,  he's not sure just how much upside is left for old crop prices.

He points out that one of the challenges for buyers right now is being able to make commitments that they don't know, they can source.
