Environment Canada calling for "hazardous frostbite conditions"

As our extreme cold warning continues into the weekend for Central Alberta, Environment Canada is now calling for hazardous frostbite conditions. 

Temperatures today, Friday January 12th, will stay steady at around minus 35. Wind chill values could be as low as minus 52 Friday morning and minus 47 this afternoon. 

Saturday could be even colder with a forecast high of minus 41 and a low of minus 47. This doesn't take into account any wind chill values.

Sunday warms up a bit with a forecast high of minus 37.

Lacombe Fire responds to structure fire at The Corner Laundry Mat

Just before 2:00 pm, Thursday afternoon, Lacombe Fire Department were called to a structure fire at The Corner Laundry Mat (4910, 51 Avenue) in Downtown Lacombe.

Three units responded to the call. Although there were no flames visible from outside the business, there was smoke coming from the building. Firefighters were wearing masks as they entered. 

Blackfalds announced as host of 2024 Women's Canadian Fast Pitch Championship

For the first time in 25 years, the Women's Canadian Fast Pitch Championship is set to take place in Alberta, and Blackfalds is stepping up to the plate as host for the event.

“Softball Canada is excited to award the 2024 Women’s Canadian Fast Pitch Championship to Blackfalds, Alberta,” said Gilles LeBlanc, Operation Manager of Softball Canada. “This will mark the first time in 25 years this event will be held in Alberta, and we’re excited to work with the local organizing committee to stage an event that will attract the top Women’s teams in Canada.”

Lacombe museums opening exhibition showcasing love letters between Canada and Ukraine

The Lacombe Flat Iron Building Museum is featuring courtship, companionship, and family in the Ukrainian Canadian community in a new exhibition called, "Love Letters From the Past."

The exhibition was developed by the Kule Folklore Centre at the University of Alberta and focuses on the lives of early 20th century Ukrainian Canadians through love letters and love stories, Executive Director of the Lacombe Museums Melissa Blunden explains.   

Rocky RCMP charge 14-year-old with assault on child

On Dec. 21, 2023, Rocky Mountain House RCMP were dispatched to an assault of a 7-year-old which occurred at a bus stop in the Town of Rocky Mountain House. EMS attended and the victim was transported to a local hospital.

As a result of the investigation, a 14-year-old youth has been charged with assault causing bodily harm. Due to the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the youth cannot be named.

The youth has been released on conditions and will be appearing in Alberta Court of Justice in Rocky Mountain House on Feb. 15, 2024.

RDP athletes getting ready for second half of season

With students returning to their classrooms this week so will the student-athletes return to their various playing surfaces around the ACAC as the second half of the season starts with multiple home games this weekend.

On Friday night, the Kings and Queens Basketball teams will host the Lethbridge College Kodiaks with the Queens to start at 6 pm with the men to follow while the Queens Hockey team welcomes the Lakeland College Rustlers for a 7 pm puck drop inside the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

People with private drug coverage more likely to stick to prescriptions: StatCan

A new Statistics Canada study confirms that financial limitations are keeping people without private or employer-sponsored drug coverage from following through with their prescriptions.

It's true for both those who have no coverage at all and people who have some coverage through provincial or existing federal prescription programs.

The results of the study come as the New Democrats and the government negotiate the broad principles that will shape a federal pharmacare program.

Farmers should think about the impact soil compaction and wheel tracks have on the crop


Wheel tracks in a field can lead to soil compaction and depending on the depth can have a key impact on a crops yield potential.

Marla Riekman. a soil management specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, says soil compaction is more of an issue when your soil is moist and near capacity:

"Your soils are lubricated, the water that's in the soil can allow that soil to kind of move around. It's reduced in shear strength and now those big pores are filled with air. They've been allowed to drain, they can be crushed. The small pores are water-filled, they hold in place."

Red Deer and Innisfail residents arrested during attempted break and enter

On Dec. 29, 2024, at approximately 2 a.m., Olds RCMP were alerted to a break and enter in progress at a local business. Officers attended and surrounded the business, trapping the suspects. The suspects attempted to flee the scene by jumping a fence, however, the officers were able to apprehend the suspects.
