Burman University hosting first Lifestyle Medicine and Flourishing Symposium in May

Burman University will be hosting its first-ever Lifestyle Medicine and Flourishing Symposium in early May.

Dr. Pekka Maattanen, is an associate professor and Chair of Biology at Burman University.

"We're having a really special event to emphasize lifestyle medicine," he said. "Basically, the first president of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine will be coming to Lacombe and the event is really to emphasize the power of lifestyle medicine to both prevent, treat and even possibly reverse important chronic diseases that are a major issue in Canada."

Canada has a new Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister after Mark Carney took over as Prime Minister last week. Kody Blois, an MP from the Nova Scotia riding of Kings-Hants has been tapped for the role.

Blois says he has plenty of experience in the industry being raised in an area where agriculture is important.

Liberals lagging behind other parties on nominating candidates as election looms

With a federal election call expected any day now, the Liberal party has only nominated about half of the candidates it would need to have a full slate on the ballot even as their polling numbers have been jump-started following their recent leadership race.

There will be 343 ridings contested in the upcoming vote and the Conservatives have nominated candidates in 275 of them so far. The NDP has 217 candidates and the Green Party has 208.

Consumers could find 'meaningful savings' as carbon price ends: Desjardins

Canadians can expect to feel the absence of the consumer carbon price at the pumps immediately but it may take longer to notice a difference in the price of other goods, a new report released Wednesday suggests.

The analysis by Desjardins Economics comes less than a week after Prime Minister Mark Carney and his new Liberal cabinet ordered that the consumer levy be set to zero on April 1.

The carbon price came with a quarterly rebate to offset the cost of inflation; the final rebate will come in April.

RDP, Sunchild First Nation launch program encouraging students into trades

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) and Sunchild First Nation have signed an agreement that will give Sunchild First Nation School students the opportunity to learn about trades work.  

Through the Sunchild Elders Village Program, students will gain firsthand experience of trades work in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical under RDP’s instruction and supervision, while also helping build homes for Elders near the Nation’s school. 

Annual inflation rate jumps to 2.6% in February with tax holiday end: StatCan

The annual rate of inflation accelerated sharply to 2.6 per cent in February as the federal government’s temporary tax break came to an end mid-month, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

That marks a sizeable jump from the 1.9 per cent increase seen in January, when Canadians saw GST and HST taken off a variety of household staples, common gifts and restaurant bills for the entire month.

Rocky Mountain House bulk water station to be shut down Wednesday

A note for residents of Rocky Mountain House that bulk water station will be shut down on Wednesday.

In order for the Town of Rocky Mountain House to complete essential infrastructure updates, the water treatment plant system will be temporarily shut off during the construction period, which is scheduled to last approximately six (6) hours. 

There will be no impact to residents and the water coming from your taps! Water will be supplied to the Town via the water reservoir during this time. 

Chinook’s Edge administrators welcome incoming Superintendent Ryan Sawula

School and division administrators have had an opportunity to hear from the division’s incoming Superintendent, Ryan Sawula, who came for a part of the regular meeting of administrators on March 12.

Current Superintendent, Kurt Sacher, told the gathering that he has been impressed with Sawula so far, and encouraged staff to “have a positive mindset around transition. I see our organization as continuing to do great work under Ryan’s leadership.”

Lacombe residents warned about bylaw ticketing scam

The City of Lacombe is warning residents of a text/email scam involving fake bylaw tickets from "Alberta Municipal Ticketing." 

The City says it never informs residents of bylaw infractions through email or text messaging. 

Enforcement Services only issues tickets directly on vehicles or through traditional mail service.

If you receive a suspicious message, disregard the message and do not click any links or send any financial information.
