Third novel by former Red Deer resident digs deep into Central Alberta history
A new novel from former Red Deer resident Elinor Florence is based in Central Alberta.
Finding Flora, set to be released on April 1, tells the story of a Scottish newcomer who jumps from a moving train in 1905 to escape her abusive husband and finds herself alone on the Prairies. She makes her way to Red Deer, where she files a claim on a homestead located between Lacombe and Alix.
"I write stories about strong women," said Florence.
Conservatives, People's Party select candidates for new federal Red Deer riding
The federal Conservatives have selected Burton Bailey as their candidate for the newly re-aligned riding of Red Deer in the next federal election.
Bailey has served for many years as executive assistant to Red Deer-North MLA Adriana Lagrange.
He was selected during a vote held March 8 beating out Penhold Mayor Mike Yargeau and Red Deer Public Schools Board Chair Nicole Buchanan.
Meanwhile, the People’s Party of Canada has selected local certified financial planner Kyla Courte as their candidate.
Pigeon Lake couple to build chicken coop with $100K lotto winnings
Helene and David Kimber of Mulhurst Bay (Pigeon Lake) won $100,050 on the January 15 EXTRA draw and have big plans for the money.
“I want to build a chicken coop,” smiled Helene. “We’ve got the space for it!”
David added that the couple is also considering buying a new four-season trailer.
“I kept looking up each number and they matched one by one,” Helene said. “I was so excited but I waited until Dave came home from work so we could do it together.”
Helene and David purchased their winning ticket from Sandholm Corner Store in Thorsby.

Generals pick up first win of Vanberg Cup Final; Eagles lead series 2-1
The Lacombe Generals picked up their first win of the Vanberg Cup Final beating Innisfail 4-3 at home Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of about 900 people.
The Eagles lead the best-of-seven North Central Senior AA Hockey League championship series 2-1.
The Generals were up 2-0 after the first with goals by Jared Williams (short-handed) and Craig Gans, who picked up three points in the game.

Carney heading to Europe for first foreign trip since becoming prime minister
Mark Carney departed for his first foreign trip on Sunday, set to visit France and the U.K., with an additional stop in Iqaluit, Nvt., during a whirlwind three-day jaunt.
The aim of the trip is to strengthen ties with France and the U.K. and reaffirm Canada's Arctic sovereignty before returning on Tuesday.
Carney is expected to talk about security and economic and trade ties while in Europe, where he will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Carney will also meet with King Charles while in the U.K.

Canadian woman returns home after being detained by U.S. immigration officials
A Canadian woman detained for nearly two weeks by immigration officials in the United States is back on home soil, her mother confirmed.
Alexis Eagles said her daughter, Jasmine Mooney, landed at the Vancouver International Airport at around midnight Saturday and returned to her home in the city.
Eagles said she was at the airport to greet her 35-year-old daughter, along with friends of the businesswoman and former actress.
