UN refugee chief says reducing refugee targets is wise if it prevents backlash

The head of the United Nations refugee agency says it is wise of Canada to scale back the number of new refugees it plans to resettle if that helps stabilize the housing market and prevents backlash against newcomers.

Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, met with the prime minister in Ottawa on Monday.

His visit comes a little more than a week after the federal government announced plans to cut overall immigration levels by 20 per cent for 2025 — a cut that includes refugees and protected persons.

Rebels complete comeback in Calgary

The Red Deer Rebels won their second straight beating Calgary Monday night 3-2 at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

With the win, Red Deer has taken over top spot in WHL Central Division.

The Rebels opened the scoring at 2:31 of the first as Evan Smith netted his first of the season.

The Hitman went up 2-1 heading into the third with goals by Rylan Ng and Carter Yakemchuk.

Red Deer would complete the comeback with goals by Jace Weir and Jaxon Fuder in the third.

Indian prime minister condemns violence at Hindu temple in Ontario

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is condemning violence that erupted Sunday when Indian consular officials visited a Hindu temple in Brampton, Ont., as police announced three people have been charged in the clash.

Visits by Indian officials to the temple in Brampton and another in Surrey, B.C., were met with protests from demonstrators seeking a separate Sikh nation called Khalistan.

Local animal shelter's blood drive aims to provide critical care

The Canadian Animal Blood Bank in partnership with Fostering Hope Animal Rescue Foundation is working to provide critical support to animals facing medical emergencies.   

Fostering Hope fosters and pet owners across the Central Alberta region are encouraged to bring their animals to the Cedarwood Veterinary and Animal Emergency Hospital for an animal blood drive on Nov. 6.  

Memorable weekend for Ponoka Broncs football

It was a historic weekend for Ponoka Broncs football.

Since football’s return to Ponoka in 2007, the Broncs hadn't won a league championship until this past weekend. 

The Bantam Broncs earned the Pool A CAFL title, while the Peewee Broncs earned the Pool C CPWFL title. The Senior Broncs won their last game, earning third spot. 

The bantams and seniors have advanced to provincials, another first for Ponoka football.

The Bantam Broncs will be hosting provincials against the Taber Rebels on Saturday, November 9 at 2 p.m.

Thousands expected to attend Remembrance Day service in Lacombe

The president of the Royal Canadian Legion Lacombe Branch #79 says they have a "simple yet meaningful ceremony" planned for Monday, November 11th.

Kathy Hobbs notes the service will take place at the Lacombe Memorial Centre starting at 10:30 a.m.

She encourages people to come early.

"We have thousands that come and we go into the overflow room as well."

Hobbs says at 10:30 a.m. the Red Deer & District Pipe Band will be bringing in the Colour Party which includes the Lacombe Police Service, RCMP, Lacombe Fire Department, and EMS personnel.
