Prime Minister calls on railways and the union to reach a deal

As the clock ticks down on the strike deadline there's an overwhelming call for the Canadian government to intervene and prevent a national rail strike.

For months now Canadian Pacific Kansas City, Canadian National and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference have been at the bargaining table but to no avail.

On Sunday, the union announced that unless the parties reached a last-minute agreement, workers would be off the job as of 12:01 a.m. eastern time Thursday.

Taylor Ranches up for National Environmental Stewardship Award


A key highlight during the Canadian Beef Industry Conference is the naming of the winners for the 2024 National Environmental Stewardship Award.

Among the finalists for the title is Taylor Ranches a family run cow-calf operation on the Milk River Ridge southwest of Warner, Alberta.

Robert Taylor says he and his family operate an 800 head commercial black angus herd with a focus on wildlife management and habitat.

Smilezone transforms rehab spaces in Red Deer for young patients

Young Central Alberta patients now have a reason to smile when they come for treatment with Children’s Rehabilitation Services.   

The first Smilezone in Central Alberta was unveiled today (Aug. 21), in the 49th Street Community Health Centre.   

Donated by the Smilezone Foundation, with support from Ron and Cari MacLean, the Smilezone includes colourful murals, sensory development equipment, and kid-friendly technology.  

Traffic disruptions on Thornburn Avenue start today

Red Deer motorists are advised of a road closure on Thorburn Avenue beginning today (Aug. 21).   

Until Sept. 3, the northbound lane of Thorburn Avenue will be closed from Townsend Street to Township Road 384.   

Traffic will be detoured along 67 Street and Townsend Street.   

Access to the commercial area will be available via the southbound lane of Thorburn Avenue.  

Business groups call on federal government to prevent rail work stoppage

A coalition of business groups is calling on the federal government to prevent a work stoppage at Canada's two biggest railways.

A phased shutdown of the networks at Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. is already underway as the clock ticks down on contract talks with the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference.

Unless deals are reached, rail service at both companies is poised to stop at 12:01 a.m. ET on Thursday.

"Freedom Convoy" organizer Tamara Lich wasn't part of any conspiracy to break the law when she helped organize a massive protest against pandemic restrictions in Ottawa, her lawyers argued in her criminal trial on Tuesday.

The Crown alleges Lich and fellow organizer Chris Barber, who owns a Saskatchewan trucking business, were in cahoots to block roads and disrupt locals in a bid to pressure the federal government to drop COVID-19 vaccine mandates in 2022.

2024 Reg Schellenberg Next Generation Legacy Award recipient announced at the Canadian Beef Industry Conference

The Canadian Cattle Foundation (the Foundation) presented the second annual Reg Schellenberg Next Generation Legacy Award to support the Canadian Cattle Young Leaders (CYL) Program last night at the Canadian Beef Industry Conference. 

The recipient of the 2024 award Cassie Marchand from Vernon, BC was presented by Lynn Grant, Vice President of the Foundation & Canadian Cattle Association Board member. 

Red Deer RCMP seek public assistance in locating missing 15-year-old

The Red Deer RCMP are seeking public assistance in locating missing 15-year-old Saydie Raine.

Saydie was last seen in the Glendale area of Red Deer on the morning of August 18. 

There is concern for her well-being.

Saydie Raine is described as:

·        5 feet 5 inches and approximately 170 pounds

·        Medium complexion

·        Pink hair and brown eyes

·        Last seen wearing a black and white cropped tank top, black sweater, white shorts and black backpack
