Justin Trudeau's own walk in the snow launched a historic week in federal politics
“Sunny ways, my friends. Sunny ways.”
With those words, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau began his time in office, having brought the Liberals out of the political wilderness and into a majority government in October 2015.
Those sunny ways followed him into an unseasonably warm November day weeks later, when he attended his official swearing-in at Rideau Hall. As Trudeau made his way up the driveway to the governor general’s residence, he was surrounded by family, members of his new cabinet and throngs of cheering supporters.
Freezing drizzle impacting road conditions overnight
Environment Canada has issued a freezing drizzle advisory for parts of central Alberta this evening.
Conditions are expected to improve overnight.
Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery.
Slow down driving in slippery conditions. Watch for taillights ahead and maintain a safe following distance.

Update: Single vehicle rollover on Highway 11 near Sylvan Lake
Update:
RCMP say there were no injuries resulting from a single vehicle rollover on Highway 11 near Range Road 11.
The scene has now been cleared.

Motorists travelling on Highway 11 near Sylvan Lake were dealing with delays due to a motor vehicle collision westbound approaching Highway 20 that occurred around 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
Road conditions as of 11:15 a.m. were reported as wet with sections containing snow and slush.
Drivers are advised to be cautious in the area.
Red Deer Christmas Bureau collecting books today for literacy centre
The Red Deer Christmas Bureau's third annual Book and Bottle Drive is today (Jan. 11).
Central Albertans can donate their gently used books and bottles, along with artificial Christmas trees and decorations at the Red Deer Christmas Bureau (#2 4630 61 St.) between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Carney looking to launch Liberal leadership bid next week, Joly declines to run ▶️

Alberta Teachers’ Association criticizes mandatory kindergarten testing
Back in December, the Alberta government announced enhanced literacy and numeracy screening tools for kindergarten through Grade 5 students which start this month. The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) has now shared its thoughts on the recent changes.

Rebels add import forward to roster
Following a handful of trades on Thursday, the Red Deer Rebels have added import forward Gleb Semenov (Semyonov) to the club’s roster.
A native of Moscow, Russia, Semenov was selected by the London Knights in round two, 118th overall at the 2024 OHL Import Draft.
He was picked up by the Rebels on Thursday after clearing OHL waivers.
Need for Red Deer Christmas Bureau remains steady
The Red Deer Christmas Bureau had a busy holiday season.
The organization distributed 900 hampers to Central Albertans and served nearly 800 children in the region over the holidays.
