Manitoba Pork celebrated its 60th anniversary during its annual meeting and industry banquet Thursday in Winnipeg. Producers, processors and various stakeholders gathered at the Fairmont for the day full of meetings which was capped by an evening gala. There are currently 188 registered producers in the province, representing 608 farms and 22,000 full-time equivalent jobs.
Poilievre pledges to use the notwithstanding clause, Carney talks defence procurement
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is promising that a government led by him would use the notwithstanding clause to override Charter rights to implement his tough-on-crime agenda — something no prime minister has ever done.
Poilievre was campaigning in Montreal on Monday, where he announced he would pass a law to allow judges to impose consecutive life sentences in cases of multiple murders. The Supreme Court of Canada ruled in 2022 that imposing consecutive life sentences violates an offender's Charter rights.
Red Deer Polytechnic joins provincial initiative to support recovery on campus
Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) has been designated a recovery-friendly campus, joining a growing number of Alberta post-secondary institutions committed to supporting students and staff in recovery from substance use and addictive behaviours.
The announcement came during a ceremony on RDP’s main campus on April 9, where the school signed the Recovery Friendly Campus pledge — part of a provincewide initiative led by Recovery on Campus Alberta.
Update: Red Deer RCMP respond to a report of a firearm

April 14, at approximately 11:49 a.m. RCMP responded to an individual seen with an imitation firearm. In connection to this incident Red Deer RCMP has charged Maverick McGillivary, an 18-year-old resident of Red Deer, with the following offences:
Sunny celebrates Classroom of the Month with Crestomere Grade 2 & 3 class
Sunny celebrated April's Classroom of the Month with a trip to Miss Kallyn Michielsen Grade 2/3 class at Crestomere School in Crestomere on April 14.
The class was super excited to meet Sunny and was treated to lunch from Boston Pizza.
Each student also received a prize bag which was filled up with gifts from local sponsors, including some pretty cool sunglasses and T-shirts.
A round of questions for Sunny, some stories and fun, then it was hugs and high fives!
Sundre RCMP investigate mischief
Sundre RCMP is investigating an incident which occurred to the Sundre Car Wash sign on April 11, 2025, at 12:45 a.m. The suspect spray-painted graffiti on a sign.
CCTV captured the suspect in the act and RCMP request public assistance in identifying this person. The suspect was wearing a black mask, dressed completely in white clothes and was riding a bike.

Alberta claims first tornado of 2025
A landspout tornado touched down in southern Alberta near Rolling Hills on Saturday, marking the first confirmed tornado in Canada so far this year, according to Environment Canada. Rolling Hills is located over two hours southeast of Calgary.
"It occurred at about 5:20 p.m. local time," said Eric Van Lochem, operational meteorologist with Environment Canada. "Didn't cause anything in the way of damage, as far as we can tell at this time. So it will likely be on the low end of the Enhanced Fujita scale … this will probably be in that EF0 range."
