Lacombe Rams defence shines in home win over Stettler
What a difference a week can make.
The Lacombe Composite High School Rams had a bounce-back game Friday night in front of a raucous crowd at MEGlobal Athletic Park.
The Rams defeated the Stettler Wildcats by a score of 35-21 in their 2024 home opener. Lacombe was shut out 20-0 last week by Thurber to open up the season.
Manhunt ends as second suspect in Airdrie man’s murder arrested on O'Chiese First Nation
Over a month after a deadly shooting in Rocky View County, which claimed the life of an Airdrie man, RCMP announced that 28-year-old Elijah Strawberry was arrested Friday afternoon.
"Following an intense search and multiple pleas for information, members of the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit successfully and safely arrested Strawberry at a residence on O’Chiese First Nation," police stated.
He will be taken before a justice of the peace to determine his release status and future court date.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that the NATO military alliance would draw itself into war if it allows Ukraine to use donated weapons to make long-range strikes inside Russia.
His comments come five weeks after Ukrainian forces stormed the border and put parts of Russian territory under foreign occupation for the first time since the Second World War.
Red Deer council considers new urban encampment response
Red Deer City Council is set to review interim and long-term solutions to homelessness during the Sept. 16 meeting.
The proposed new actions include maintaining a balanced mitigation strategy and exploring housing solutions.
The potential changes come in response to Councillor Lawrence Lee’s motion to review the city’s Urban Encampment Responses.
Red Deer Polytechnic receives historic research grant
Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) has been awarded an historic federal research grant.
RDP has received a $3.25 million Mobilize grant, the largest one-time applied research grant in the institution’s 60-year history.
The grant is being provided by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). It will enable RDP to leverage data-driven solutions to foster regional innovation and prosperity across RDP’s applied research pillars: Manufacturing & Advanced Manufacturing, Energy Innovation, Healthcare & Health Technology and Social Innovation.
Town of Bentley gives first reading on Sunset Heights structure plan
The Council of the Town of Bentley has given first reading to By-law No. 249/2024 (Sunset Heights Area Structure Plan).
The new bylaw will replace and repeal By-law No. 178/2014 (Summersault Area Structure Plan) if approved.
Local job seekers shop for employment during fair held at Lacombe Centre Mall
About two dozen local businesses accepted resumes Thursday during a Fall Job Fair hosted by the Lacombe Employment Centre.
The event was held at the Lacombe Centre Mall.
Program Manager Monika Rondeel revealed Lacombe hasn't hosted a job fair in over a decade.
"We've had a lot of people say that they would like to have a job fair here in Lacombe because they can't get into Red Deer because transportation is an issue," she commented.

City of Lacombe hosts community conference to discuss social needs
The City of Lacombe hosted a Community Conference on Tuesday, September 10 to establish actions and strategies that have emerged out of the Social Needs Assessment and Prioritization.
The city has contracted bassa Social Innovations to help facilitate the project, which is now into Phase 2.
