RDCRS approves 2024-2025 budget

The Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) Board of Trustees approved the 2024-2025 budget during the May 24 meeting.  

The approved budget includes a slight decrease in projected student enrolment and adjustments to staffing levels.  

The board approved a budget of $119,403,813 in total revenue and total expenses.  

Suspect herbicide-resistant kochia? Here’s what to do

Approximately two weeks after spraying, scout to check for surviving weeds that may need a second application. These weed “escapes” have a number of potential causes – from sprayer misses to low water rates.

Another common cause is herbicide resistance. In the case of kochia, herbicide resistance is a safe assumption as many kochia populations have stacked resistance to multiple groups.

Maskwacis RCMP respond to an incident on Louis Bull First Nation

The Maskwacis RCMP responded to an incident on Louis Bull First Nation today (June 4).  

At approximately 9 a.m., RCMP advised the public of a heavy police presence in Louis Bull First Nation.  

As a precaution while police responded, the Kisipatnahk School had been placed on a hold and secure.  

Freeland says committee finding that some MPs aided foreign interference 'concerning'

Canada's deputy prime minister says the finding that some Canadian members of Parliament were "wittingly" helping foreign state actors is "concerning," but she trusts that law enforcement will do its job. 

Chrystia Freeland's comments come after a committee of MPs and senators released a report Monday that said intelligence shows foreign actors worked to foster relationships with parliamentarians. 

Delburne students celebrate 10th Annual Soap Box Derby

Delburne School hosted its 10th annual Soapbox Derby on Friday, May 31st, an event the whole community eagerly anticipates and supports. It's a project that harkens back to simpler times, and one that brings generations and community together.

The Soapbox Derby at Delburne School sees Grade 8 students create soap box cars over a period of several months. Starting with a kit ordered from Manitoba, along with purchased plywood, each student and their partner builds a go-kart like vehicle from scratch, paints it and equips it with wheels and a steering mechanism.

Prairie cattle marketing highlights

Saskatchewan's average feeder steer and heifer prices were unavailable from Canfax in all weight categories last week due to a lack of sufficient data, as cattle are moving back out to pasture.  

The Saskatchewan weekly cattle marketing report is taking a summer break and will return with weekly updates with the fall run.

Manitoba feeder steer prices ranged from an average of $290 per cwt for the 900 + weight category to a high of $441.33  per cwt for the 401 to 500 pound category

Seeding is progressing, despite the recent rains

The latest crop report shows light showers across most of the province in the last week has helped to improve soil moisture conditions. 

Overall, farmers now have 77 per cent  of the 2024 crop seeded, with about 40 per cent now emerged despite the cool wet weather.

Seeding is most advanced in the Peace Region at 86 per cent, followed by the South Region at 84 per cent, the North East and North West Region have the most left to seed with 71 and 72 per cent complete.

Canola Watch identifies insect issues of concern

The latest Canola Watch newsletter reminds producers to monitor fields regularly for insect and disease issues.

There have been increasing reports of cutworm feeding activity, with some canola reseeding in parts of the Prairies.

If farmers see significant numbers or activity, they are asked to send the cutworm species identification to the Prairie Pest Monitoring Network in their location. 

Flea beetles are another insect that should be on the radar for canola producers.

CATTLElytics founder recognized


The Canadian Women Entrepreneur in Industry Gala held its awards last week.

The CEO and Founder of CATTLEytics Shari Van de Pol was recognised with the "Total Mom Inc.'s Tech for Good Award" for Advancing the Dairy Industry and the Welfare of its Animals.

According to the company website, the CATTLEytics Dairy Health and Management System is the control centre for a dairy operation.

"From diagnosis to animal health, reproduction performance to vaccination planning, this is seamless, easy to use, and puts you in control of your operation."

Sylvan resident spots possible tornado near Camrose

Just after 3:00 pm on Monday, June 3rd, A Sylvan Lake resident and some co-workers spotted what appears to be a tornado just south of Camrose.

The 4-man crew working for Northside Construction, were just south of Camrose and had previously seen numerous funnel clouds in the area. Derrick Bailey then started filming what looks to be a tornado.

Environment Canada have yet to confirm this but had issued a tornado advisory for the area saying that conditions were favorable for possible funnel clouds.
