Red Deer outdoor water amenities open today

Red Deerians can make a splash as the Recreation Centre Outdoor Pool opens for the season today (June 1).  

The outdoor pool is located at the Recreation Centre (4501 47A Avenue) and features a 50-metre pool for public and lane swimming, one and three-metre diving boards, and a children’s shallow area with spray features. There are also deck chairs for lounging around the pool.  

B.C. serial killer Robert Pickton dead after prison assault in Quebec

Robert Pickton, one of Canada's most notorious serial killers, died on Friday, 12 days after he was assaulted in prison.

Pickton, an inmate at Port-Cartier Institution in Quebec, was 74.

For some, the death brings closure. But it also leaves open questions about the botched police investigation into Pickton, who was convicted in 2007 of six counts of second-degree murder but was suspected of killing dozens more women at his pig farm in Port Coquitlam, B.C.

Red Deer RCMP Crime Reduction Team make significant drug seizure

On May 29, Red Deer Crime Reduction Team officers observed a known repeat offender operating a motor vehicle while prohibited.

Due to this offender’s history of dangerous driving and flight from police, including ramming a police vehicle, police conducted surveillance and brought in additional resources including Calgary Police Services HAWCS helicopter, Innisfail RCMP, Police Dog Services, the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team, and RCMP Central Alberta District Crime Reduction Team.

Once exiting the motor vehicle, the suspect was safely arrested.

Maskwacis RCMP investigate stabbing on Samson Cree Nation

On April 12, the Maskwacis RCMP received a report of a stabbing that occurred in the Samson Cree Nation townsite.

When police arrived, they located a victim who was taken by STARS to hospital with serious injuries.

The Maskwacis RCMP General Investigations Section was deployed and has taken carriage of the investigation.

Witnesses indicate two suspects forced their way into the home earlier where they sprayed the occupants with a mace type substance. They later returned, threatened the victim with a firearm before attacking the victim with an edged weapon.

Chinook's Edge approves $140 million budget for 2024-2025 school year

Red Deer resident charged with first degree murder

A Red Deer Resident has been charged with first degree murder.

On Nov. 8, 2023, Valleyview RCMP responded to a report of a male who had been assaulted and was suffering from serious lacerations to his body at a residence on Sturgeon Lake First Nation, Alta. He was transported to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy conducted by the Edmonton Medical Examiners Office determined that the victim, 36-year-old Aaron Bellcourt, had died as a result of his injuries and the death was deemed a homicide.

Sunny celebrates Classroom of the Month at École Mother Teresa School

Sunny was so excited to visit Mrs. Sola’s Grade 6 class at École Mother Teresa School in Sylvan Lake for Classroom of the Month! 

Before heading to Sylvan Lake, we loaded up the station vehicle with pizza from Boston Pizza and some great prizes from our sponsors.

National task force not lowering age for routine breast cancer screening to 40

A national task force that provides guidance for primary health-care providers is not lowering the recommended breast cancer screening age to 40, despite urging from several cancer specialists, surgeons and radiologists. 

The Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care has been reviewing its current advice that women start routine breast cancer screening at age 50.

It holds firm on that position, and on previous advice against routine screening past age 74.
