Two Ponoka area residents arrested after $100,000 in stolen items recovered

On May 18, 2024 Ponoka RCMP received a report of potential stolen items being located at a rural residence. After a short investigation, on May 23, 2024, and May 24, 202,4 Ponoka RCMP executed search warrants at a rural property on Morning Meadow Drive in Ponoka County.

As a result of the search, RCMP have seized several confirmed stolen items from various residential and commercial Break and Enters in the area, additionally, RCMP have seized a large amount of copper wire, and other items which police believe are also stolen. Items recovered include:

Lacombe Minor Baseball hosting huge tournament this weekend

The Lacombe Minor Baseball Association (LMBA)  is holding a big tournament this weekend.

The LMBA "A" tournament will kick off Friday and will run right through the weekend with the finals on Sunday at Michener Park in Lacombe. 

This is one of the biggest baseball tournaments in Central Alberta. Over 40 games are scheduled with teams ranging in age from U9-U18.

Central Alberta Buccaneers kick off 2024 season this Saturday

The Central Alberta Buccaneers of the Alberta Football League (AFL) will kick off their 2024 season this Saturday against the Calgary Wolfpack. 

The Wolfpack are their oldest rival and will be looking for revenge after losing to the Bucs last season. Josh Thomas the media coordinator and receiver for the Buccaneers says they are very excited for the new season and a return to Lacombe.

Alberta Major Crimes investigating Wetaskiwin resident homicide

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit is continuing an investigation into human remains found in an area south of Spruce Grove in Parkland County.   

The deceased has been identified as 19-year-old Wetaskiwin resident, Eric George Moonias.  

The RCMP is now seeking information from the public on the activities and whereabouts of Moonias in the first two weeks of May.  

Canada to see warm summer, wildfire risks loom for some regions: Weather Network

Get ready to feel the heat, Canada.

The Weather Network is predicting more sunshine and warmer temperatures for the summer.

The weather broadcaster's annual summer forecast released Wednesday indicates Canada will be blanketed in heat over the next three months as the country sees fewer rainy days and several regions experience humid conditions.

"We'd be very surprised, very surprised, if this didn't turn out overall as a warm summer," Chris Scott, the Weather Network's chief meteorologist, said in an interview.

Trudeau to attend G7 summit in Italy, Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to attend the G7 leaders' summit next month in Italy, followed by the Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland. 

In a news release today, the Prime Minister's Office says Trudeau's focus at the G7 summit will be on highlighting the importance of democracy, promoting fair economic growth and combating foreign interference.

Trudeau's office says he will also hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts and discuss the Israel-Hamas and Russia-Ukraine wars.

Red Deer Council passes Vehicle for Hire Bylaw changes

Red Deer City Council passed changes to the Vehicle for Hire Bylaw during the May 27 regular council meeting.  

Council postponed the decision during the April 29 meeting with a request for more information from city administration.  

The bylaw was implemented in 2021 following the introduction of Transportation Network Companies (TNC) and rideshare companies in Red Deer.  

Five Ontario school boards, two schools join legal fight against social media giants

Five more Ontario school boards and two private schools have joined the multi-billion-dollar legal fight against social media giants Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat, accusing their parent companies of leaving educators to manage the fallout from their allegedly addictive products. 

They join some of Ontario's largest school boards who filed suits in March alleging the platforms are negligently designed for compulsive use and have rewired the way children think, behave and learn.
