Man in life-threatening condition after motorcycle crash in southeast Calgary
The Calgary Police Service (CPS) is investigating a motorcycle collision in south Calgary from early Tuesday morning (June 17) that left a man in life-threatening condition.
It happened around 12:47 a.m. Tuesday on the on-ramp from eastbound Stoney Trail S.E. to northbound Deerfoot Trail S.E.
Police say a black 2009 Harley-Davidson FXDB, driven by a 39-year-old man, was headed east on Stoney Trail when it veered into the lanes of another on-ramp from Cranston Boulevard S.E.
ADOPT funding announced
Saskatchewan's Agriculture Demonstration of Practices and Technologies (ADOPT) projects, and Strategic Field Program (SFP) benefit from Federal-Provincial Sustainable CAP funding.
Farmers benefit from the practical, short-term research projects conducted through the ADOPT, which they can then use on their own operation.
For the 2024-25 fiscal year, more than $1.4 million was invested in six SFP and 32 ADOPT projects.
Tornado season is here
Tornado season has essentially started in Alberta.
On Friday night, a tornado warning was issued by Environment Canada for the Hanna region.
Fortunately, the warning was downgraded to a watch, and there were no reported touchdowns.
However, it's a good reminder to be prepared in case you get caught in the path of one.
Environment Canada has some tips in case of extreme summer weather conditions.
Highwood River is still well below normal levels
The Highwood River that runs through High River is well below normal flow rates.
The Town of High River monitors the river flow and releases a report on Fridays during the hazard season.
Friday, June 13, turned out to be relatively lucky with the current flow rate measured at 8.52 cubic metres per second.
It's just a small increase from last week's flow rate of 6.59 metres per second.
Normal flow rates are between 25 to 65 cubic metres per second.
Even with predicted rain this week, it's not expected to increase the flow rate significantly.
The Nanton Bomber Command Museum is hosting a special dedication to Indigenous airmen
The Nanton Bomber Command Museum is hosting an event this weekend, which will honour the Indigenous air crew that fought in the Second World War.
According to the Museum Curator, Karl Kjarsgaard, the museum hosts events throughout the summer to celebrate the bomber command contribution and sacrifice during the second World War.
"We love to run the Lancaster bomber, and that's the focal point of the event," Kjarsgaard explains. "But, we usually have a theme. And this year, June 21, there is an exciting announcement."
Deadline nearing for Okotoks Hall of Fame nominations
The deadline to nominate someone for the Okotoks Hall of Fame is quickly approaching.
Launched in 2013, the Okotoks Hall of Fame recognizes people and groups who have made outstanding and lasting contributions to the community.
The nomination and selection process is made every four years across three categories: Arts & Culture, Community Service, and Sports.
To be eligible, nominees must have lived in Okotoks or, in the case of a group, operated in Okotoks, for at least five years. They must also have been residents at the time of their achievements.
Canada pledges $4.3B in support for Ukraine as Carney, Zelenskyy meet at G7
Prime Minister Mark Carney outlined $4.3 billion in new support for Ukraine's defence as he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Alberta on Tuesday.
The Prime Minister's Office said that sum includes $2 billion for weapons like drones, ammunition and armoured vehicles — funding that Canada will count toward its NATO defence spending target.
Canada is also lending Ukraine $2.3 billion to help the embattled country rebuild its infrastructure.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for Vulcan County and parts of Foothills County
Southeast Alberta, including Vulcan County and parts of Foothills County, are currently under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch.
Conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms to develop, which could be capable of producing strong wind gusts this afternoon and evening.
This Watch includes Foothills County near Blackie, Siksika Nation, and Vulcan County near Arrowwood Herronton and Queenstown, Vulcan, Ensign, Champion, Milo, and more.

Canada’s national pig code is getting an update.
‘We’ve launched the code of practice with the National Farm Animal Care Council,” said Stephen Heckbert, executive director of the Canadian Pork Council.
The Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pigs will be guided by the development process set out by the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC), the spearheading body for Canada’s various livestock codes.
