Liberals to turn the page on the Justin Trudeau era as party selects successor

Liberals are gathering in Ottawa on the final day of their party's leadership contest to vote for who they think is best to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the helm.

Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney remains the presumed front runner and as of this weekend has lapped his opponents in fundraising figures by millions of dollars.

Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, Liberal lawmaker Karina Gould and Montreal businessman Frank Baylis are all vying for the party's top job.

What exactly is Foehn wind, and how is it created?

People who live up against the southern Rockies have experience Foehn wind, but what is it exactly, and how is it created?

According to Environment & Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Stephen Berg, Foehn wind is a dry, warm downslope wind on the leeward side, or Eastern side, of the Rockies that can raise the temperature of the area. 

Heading out to go hiking this weekend? Keep an eye on avalanche-caused closures 

If you are heading out to the mountains to hike this weekend, make sure to check out which areas are closed due to risk of avalanches.

While the ridge of mountains to the west of us currently has a moderate risk of avalanches occurring, there are a few areas that are closed in Kananaskis Country, due to avalanche control.

As part of the avalanche control work, crews will be using explosives to trigger avalanches, causing them to close down the areas they are working in to help keep people safe.

The Liberals are about to choose the next prime minister. What happens next?

The Liberals will choose a new leader Sunday, marking the end of Justin Trudeau's decade as prime minister.

He will step down officially in the days to come. On Tuesday, Trudeau said he will have a conversation with the incoming leader to determine exactly when that will happen.

"It should happen reasonably quickly, but there's a lot of things to do in a transition like this, particularly in this complicated time in the world," Trudeau said.

Update: Police believe missing woman could be in rural area around Calgary

A 64-year-old Bankview resident reported missing by the Calgary Police Service (CPS) has been found.

On Friday (March 7), CPS reported that the woman hadn't been heard from in several days, and that there was concern for her safety.

On Saturday morning, CPS confirmed she had been found safe.

With the weather and snow melt, here is how to avoid water buildup

Now that the snow has begun to melt, thanks to the warm sunshine, there are ways to prevent water buildup.

The Town of High River reminds people that while melting snow and ice can create overland water buildup, such as large puddles on streets and sidewalks, standing water can become a problem.

It can be especially problematic if the water blocks pathways, causes groundwater flooding, or freezes and creates icy patches.

High River pool reopens just in time for a warm weekend

The pool at the Bob Snodgrass rec plex is back in business.

It's been closed since Monday (March 3) evening due to an issue with its main pump.

As it could have presented a safety risk, the Town erred on the side of caution and closed it entirely until the issue was resolved.

The pool was reopened just in time for a warm weekend, with daytime highs in the double digits expected.

Oilers players eager to compete in front of Chestermere fans

The regular season is almost over for the U17 AAA Okotoks Oilers, but the players are still working hard ahead of the playoffs.

The team is comprised of players from Strathmore, Chestermere, Okotoks, and High River.

Coach Ken Plaquin said the team will play the Calgary Bulls on Saturday, March 8 at 5 p.m. at the Chestermere Rec Centre.

"It's just really fun for the kids that are from Strathmore, and Chestermere to get a chance to play in front of their friends that they usually don't get when they're playing in Okotoks."

A free concert for kids 'Inspired by Land' runs this Saturday

There's a free concert for kids coming up tomorrow afternoon at the High River United Church.

It's put on by the High River Gift of Music Society and they're bringing Samantha Whelan Kotkas on trumpet and Walter White Bear on guitar, drum and courting flute.

They share stories and play music with a cross-cultural emphasis.

The performance is inspired by the land, water and sky, designed to reconnect people with nature and Indigenous ways.
