The Water Treatment Plant in Diamond Valley caught on fire over the weekend, but remains fully functional

The Diamond Valley Fire Rescue responded to a fire alarm at the Water Treatment Plant late Sunday night.

At approximately 11:10 p.m. on June 8, an industrial building fire alarm went off at the Water Treatment plant on the Turner Valley side of town.

When the firefighters arrived on the scene, they saw smoke coming from the building, which then upgraded the response to a structure fire.

After they forced their way into the building, the firefighters located the source of the smoke.

There was an electrical fire in a large industrial power box.

Lethbridge Police are looking for information on a four-decade old missing person case

The Lethbridge Police are asking for information on a missing person case from the early 1980s.

Julie Ann Derouin was last seen on January 1, 1980, and there have been no confirmed sightings of her since then, causing her whereabouts to remain unknown.

When she was officially reported as missing on June 6, 1983, Derouin was 26 years old, and the initial investigation had determined that she had moved to Lethbridge from the lower mainland of B.C. in the latter part of 1979.

Pride Month kicked off in Okotoks this past weekend with a flag raising and a day full of activities.

On Sunday, May 8, the Town of Okotoks raised the Pride flag at the Municipal Building at noon, which kicked off the afternoon of fun.

Following the flag raising, there was Stronger Together in the Park, which saw Ethel Tucker Park be filled with people and activities from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday (June 8).

Okotoks Dawgs score 25 runs over a pair of weekend games

The Okotoks Dawgs' bats exploded on Saturday night as they hosted the Energy City Cactus Rats at Seaman Stadium.

They scored 20 runs off 17 hits, including bringing seven runners home in the fourth inning.

Four different Dawgs pitchers held the Cactus Rats to just one run off nine hits.

Hometown standout Connor Crowson went 3 for 5 at the plate with four RBI's and one walk.

The Dawgs finished off their series against the Cactus Rats yesterday, where they hung on for a 5-4 win.

Jamie Laboucane takes the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship

High River's Jason Glass is 'this close' to winning a chuckwagon finals this season.

He came in second, for the second consecutive weekend, at the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship.

Glass just qualified for the final four on a slow track on Saturday night but just missed out on the $23,500 payday.

Jamie Laboucane took the title, buckle and cheque.

Jordie Fike from the Blackie area also had a good weekend finishing in 16th on Sunday and 17th overall allowing him to get his full-time permit for the rest of the season.

The 57th Diamond Valley Parade & Festival delight all ages

Young and old showed up in droves for the 57th Diamond Valley Parade and Festival on Saturday.

The Oilfields basketball team held a pancake breakfast fundraiser on the Black Diamond side to kick off the day at 8:30 in the high school's parking lot.

Once it was sold out, the floats and entries started the parade at 10:00 a.m. along the new route the town instituted just last year.

All the entertainment and activities then shifted to the Turner Valley side from 11:00 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The Highwood River is below normal flow rates

The Town of High River released its Highwood River monitoring update on Friday, and everything looks good.

The flow rate is well below normal at 6.59 cubic metres per second.

Normal flow rates go from 25 to 65 cubic metres per second.

It's the fourth river monitoring report the Town has done since the hazard season started.

They will continue to monitor the river flows for another few weeks until the season is over.

 

Air Quality Statement has been rescinded

It was a smoky weekend in the Foothills.

So much so that Environment and Climate Change Canada issued an Air Quality Statement on Saturday that lasted until late Sunday afternoon.

It was due to all the wildfire smoke blowing down from northern Alberta.

Visibility was reduced, and warnings were issued for people with breathing issues.

While there still may be the smell of wildfire in the air, it's expected to dissipate today.

The lack of moisture is becoming more of a concern in Alberta

Plant 2025 is virtually complete in Alberta, other than a few acres in the Peace region.

Manglai a product co-ordinator with the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation put together the latest report, adding there were very few weather interruptions, just a few localized showers.

In terms of crop development, almost all crops are ahead of average. The soil conditions are trending drier, but there's hope that producers could see some significant impact with June rains.

Okotoks firefighters eyeing FireFit nationals after blazing through regional

Members of Okotoks Fire & Rescue are once again suiting up for the FireFit Championships, a high-intensity competition testing firefighters’ strength, endurance, and teamwork.

The annual event sees firefighters from across Canada take on a series of physical challenges, all while wearing full turnout gear.

Fire Captain Ryan Chigol, a FireFit veteran with nearly 20 years of experience, rallied several colleagues to join him in last year’s competition and is doing so again this season.
