Terriers tie longest team's win streak since 2016

Another game, another addition to the win streak for the Portage Terriers, as they have now gone on the MJHL's longest win streak this season. This time, the Dogs triumphed 5-2 over the visiting Winnipeg Blues. The win also propelled the Dogs to first place in the MJHL standings.

Both teams got some strange bounces in the first period, which got great reactions from the crowd.

With seconds left in the Terriers' first powerplay, Adler Johnston tried to send a pass to the front of the net, but with a bounce off of one of the Blues' sticks, ended up in the net.

Terriers aim to extend win streak as Winnipeg Blues visit Stride Place

The Portage Terriers are into rarified air with their current ten-game winning streak. The team hasn't won this many in a row since the 2022-2023 season when Kian Calder was the captain.

The Terriers put the win streak on the line against a team that hasn't beaten them at all in the last five seasons, the Winnipeg Blues. The Blues lost their last game on Monday to the Winkler Flyers 6-1, but managed their third win of the season the night previous, a 3-0 victory over the Winnipeg Freeze.

Two Terriers selected to try their hand against SJHL competition

Hockey players are no strangers to travel, and the Portage Terriers are no exception. The team is preparing for one of their big trips later this week, when they will take the six-hour drive to The Pas.

A couple Terriers also recently made the trip from Portage la Prairie to Warman, Saskatchewan to take part in the Western All-Star Showcase, put on by the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

Thousands raised for two community groups

It was another successful year for the Portage Terriers and Central Plains Cancer Services as they teamed up once again for their annual sports dinner and auction.

It was the third year for the collaboration between the entities and 350 people packed into Canad Inns Friday night to not only show their support but to also hear NHL Hall of Famer Doug Gilmour tell a few stories.

Sharilyn Knox, executive director of Central Plains Cancer Services commented that it is an evening they really look forward to.

Ten wins in a row for the Portage Terriers

The Portage Terriers picked up their 10th win in a row on Monday night beating the Winnipeg Freeze 6-2.

The Freeze started off strong with Ben Whitford opening the scoring midway through the first period. Portage appeared to gain their footing after allowing the first goal. Scott Cousins tied the game with his second of the season and then Caleb Lepitre scored his first of the year on a delayed penalty. The Terriers outshot the Freeze 20-10 in the first period.

Terriers battle to beat Swan Valley

The Portage Terriers won a close game against the Swan Valley Stampeders 3-2, extending their win streak to nine games.

Neither team cracked the scoresheet in the first period, despite a couple powerplays each way.

The floodgates opened in the second with three goals scored.

Stampder Riley Fequet would score the opener, after a long shift for the Terriers. An icing call led to an extended offensive zone shift for Swan Valley, and from near the goal line, a shot would beat Mitchell Kathler to make it 1-0 for the Stampeder.

Portage Terriers getting involved in various community efforts

When community events that support local not-for-profits are going on, you may also find the Portage Terriers helping out.

Recently, three members of the team took part in the Coats for Kids dispersal, which provides essential items like clothing to families in our community.

Adler Johnston, Nolan Nenow and Cameron Bullinger all took part in the event, and Johnston shares what their role was.

Kasdorf giving back by coaching with Terriers

In the Portage Terriers history, only a select few have ever been drafted by an NHL franchise.

Jason Kasdorf is a success story for the franchise, backstopping the team to an MJHL title in 2011, leading the Terriers to the 2011 RBC Cup, and becoming the sixth ever pick by the Winnipeg Jets 2.0, 157th overall.

Kasdorf says his days in Portage under the tutelage of former Terrier Goalie Coach Jimmy Tkachyk were largely about technical learning.

Terrier goalies enjoying the ride to start the year

You may have to be a little off to throw yourself intentionally into the path of five-and-a-half-ounce block of vulcanized rubber. But Mitchell Kathler and Ryan Velan have somehow found a love for it, playing one of the toughest positions in all of sports.

The goalie duo for the Portage Terriers have been key parts of the eight-game win streak the Dogs find themselves on, with great performances each game. Velan came to the team after an injury in training camp, and says he feels good about getting his team in a position to win each game.

Terriers beat Winkler for the first time this season

A hard-fought game between the Portage Terriers and the Winkler Flyers ended with a 3-1 win for the Dogs.

A scoreless first period saw Portage outshoot Winkler 12-8 but both goaltenders made some outstanding saves to keep both offenses off the board.

The Flyers would open the scoring in the second period on a powerplay goal, but the Terriers would have a great shift right after to tie the game up. Decker Mujcin scored his fourth goal of the weekend, set up by Tristan Gravenor and Koy Funk.
