The Supreme Court of Canada has dismissed a request to hear an appeal from Achter Land and Cattle regarding an earlier court decision that found a thumbs-up emoji served as an agreement to a grain contract. South West Terminal launched a claim for damages after Achter Land and Cattle failed to deliver on the contract.

Local hockey goaltender shortlisted for Team Alberta U16 WHL Cup roster

 

Goaltender Karter Gibson of Airdrie has been named to the shortlist for Team Alberta’s 2025 Under-16 male hockey team.

The team will represent Alberta at the WHL Cup in October in Red Deer.

Hockey Alberta released the shortlist on July 16, naming 34 athletes — four goaltenders, 12 defencemen, and 18 forwards — who are in contention to make the final roster.

Bear warning issued for multiple Peter Lougheed campgrounds in Kananaskis

Alberta Parks has issued a bear warning for six campgrounds in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, after it reported multiple grizzly and black bears frequenting the area — the latest in a string of July advisories and one full-area closure across the Kananaskis Region.

The newest warning, posted July 26 and in effect until further notice, applies to Canyon Campground, Boulton Creek Campground, Lower Lake Campground, Lower Lake Group Campground, Interlakes Campground, and William Watson Lodge and Campground.

Flying to the U.S. from Calgary? Don’t show up too early

 

Travellers flying to the United States from YYC Calgary International Airport can now only access security screening and U.S. Customs and Border Protection a maximum of two hours before their scheduled departure.

The change is outlined in a May 13, 2025, blog post and news release on the Calgary Airport Authority’s website, where a red banner has also been posted for some time with the same information.

Clocked at 170: Driver caught east of Olds to appear in court in September

A 26-year-old driver is facing a mandatory court appearance after being caught speeding at 170 kilometres per hour on Highway 27 in Mountain View County earlier this month.

RCMP say the incident happened the evening of Sunday, July 12, near the intersection of Highway 27 and Highway 791, east of Olds.

The posted speed limit in the area is 100 km/h.

Police have not released the driver’s name but say they are scheduled to appear in provincial court on Sept. 5.

Presumed outbreak of E.coli and amoebiasis at Calgary-area food facility

Two people have been hospitalized and more than 200 have shown symptoms after a gastrointestinal outbreak at a Calgary-area food facility.

Alberta Health Services says the outbreak at Saskatoon Farm in Foothills County is presumed to be E. coli and an intestinal illness called amoebiasis.

Saskatoon Farm's food service facilities were ordered closed on Wednesday until deemed safe again, while the rest of the business remains open.

Alberta Health Services says there have been 18 lab-confirmed cases of E. coli, three of which also tested positive for amoebiasis.

Fatal single-vehicle crash near Carstairs claims life of Calgary man

A Calgary man is dead following a single-vehicle crash early Saturday, July 26, near the intersection of Highway 2 and Highway 581 at Carstairs.

Didsbury and Airdrie RCMP responded to the crash at 6 a.m., along with fire and EMS.

RCMP said the lone occupant of the vehicle, a 53-year-old Calgary man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist assisted at the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

RCMP said they extend condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Nurses group hopes premiers' new sense of unity will lead to labour mobility

The Canadian Nurses Association says it hopes the new "united Team Canada" approach at the Council of the Federation will lead to harmonization of nurses' licences across the country.

The association was among a number of health-care advocacy groups at the recent annual meeting of Canada's premiers.

While health care tends to take centre stage when the premiers meet, this year's gathering with Prime Minister Mark Carney was dominated by discussion of U.S. President Donald Trump's global trade war.
