In Monday’s release of BHP’s financial results for the full year ending June 30th, BHP announced Stage Two of the Jansen Mine will be pushed back two years to 2031.

In its report BHP notes, “While consumer inflation has fallen to close to 2 per cent in Canada, price growth for industrial construction works has been significantly stronger, increasing by over 10 per cent in the past two years in Saskatoon. This has placed upwards pressure on costs for Jansen.”

As of 9:30 am on Tuesday morning there are 60 active wildfires in the province according to the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA).  Of those active wildfires, eight are listed as contained, six are not contained, 33 are ongoing assessment and 13 are listed protecting values.  

So far this year, there have been 467 wildfires, well above the 5-year average of 382. 

The Rosebud Jr Royals participated in the Canadian Fast Pitch Championships last week in Winkler and Morden, Manitoba and finished in 5th place. 

In their first game, on Wednesday they were defeated by the Tavistock Athletics of Ontario 3-1.  

The Royals bounced back in their second game with a 16-9 victory against Elma Avengers.

Environment Minister Travis Keisig emphasized the importance of monitoring wildlife health. “Protecting our wildlife helps keep hunting and agriculture strong. We appreciate hunters who submit samples for testing and thank them for their support.” 

A 45-year-old male from Saskatoon is facing a number of charges after attempting to flee from police on Highway 16 last week. 

Last Thursday (August 14) just before 8:00 am, Lanigan Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) attempted to make a traffic stop on Highway 16 near Elstow

The vehicle was travelling at high rate of speed and did not stop. Instead, it fled from police. Officers noticed a backpack thrown out of the vehicle window. The backpack was seized by police. 

Following a day off on Monday, the second half of the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland will get started on Tuesday. 

It will be a busy start for the Women’s Baseball team with two games on Tuesday. 

They open the tournament with a matchup against Manitoba.  

That will be followed by a quick turnaround against Prince Edward Island in the afternoon. 

The Marysburg Royals live to see another day in the 2025 Saskatoon Senior Baseball League (SSBL) Playoffs.  

Marysburg avoided elimination with a 3-2 win over the Saskatoon Hoppers on Monday night. 

Thomas Lessmeister got the win on the mound, he pitched 4 innings, allowing one run on nine hits and had four strikeouts. 

Nick Anderson finished off the game, tossing 3 innings, allowing one run on two hits. 

A group of concerned atmospheric scientists have issued a position statement, calling on the provincial government to reverse its decision on extending the life of coal-fired power plants beyond the federal government’s mandated date of December 31, 2029. The provincial government’s stance also counters a draft plan from SaskPower that was developed after public consultations to comply with the CER by switching to solar and wind power generation, developing natural gas-fired power generation, and importing power from other jurisdictions.  

After a summer of rodeos, dinosaurs and door-knocking, Pierre Poilievre is now officially heading back to Ottawa as a Conservative member of Parliament for Alberta.

The Tory leader will represent the sprawling rural riding of Battle River—Crowfoot, in the province's eastern region, after winning a byelection on Monday. 

"Getting to know the people in this region has been the privilege of my life," Poilievre told a crowd at a victory party in Camrose, Alta., on Monday night. "In fact, I've had a hell of a lot of fun."

Air Canada and the union representing its flight attendants have reached a tentative deal to end a strike that began on Saturday morning.

The airline said it will gradually begin operations Tuesday.

The two sides met through the night with a federal mediator before reaching a tentative agreement that will be brought to members of the Air Canada component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

"Your right to vote on your wages was preserved," the union said in a post on its website announcement the end of the strike.
