Saskatchewan teachers' job action ends as binding arbitration agreed upon

The job action by the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation will end at 4:00 p.m. today, as the STF has agreed to participate in binding arbitration on the issues of wages and class size and complexity. The announcement was made at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon. In addition to the end of job action, no further sanctions will be taking place. 

2024 Livestock Tax Deferral regions and new buffer zone areas announced

Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay has announced an early list of Livestock Tax Deferral regions for 2024.

This year, the Government has streamlined the process to identify regions earlier in the growing season, and has included a new buffer zone adjacent to the designated regions to capture impacted producers that may be on the edge of affected areas.

This year, the majority of Alberta falls into either the designated or buffered designated regions.

The City of Humboldt moves ahead with planning for Westwood development

The City of Humboldt and developers of the planned Westwood subdivision continue to work on the realization of the housing community at the west end of Humboldt. At a special meeting of Council on Monday, the City agreed to adopt the submitted plan as the official blueprint for the development. This includes the adoption of Lakewood Drive and Lakewood Cove as the official street names for the initial stages of the development.  

Work under way on the Reid Thompson Library

The Reid Thompson Library is getting a facelift. 

The entrance and the front windows and solarium area are seeing a retrofitting happen over the next few days. The reno project has been on the books for some time, and recent rains haven’t helped speed up the process. Undaunted, workers are pressing on to give the front facade and the interior a new look, says Mike Ulriksen, Director of Community and Leisure Services.  

NDP's Jagmeet Singh says report shows 'a number of MPs' have helped foreign states

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says a recent spy watchdog report shows a "number of MPs" have knowingly provided help to foreign governments — behaviour he calls unethical or even illegal.

Singh said Thursday he is "more alarmed today" after reading an unredacted version of a report on foreign interference by the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians. 

Pope Francis to meet with Trudeau, lead session on artificial intelligence

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is headed into the second day of the G7 leaders' summit, which will feature a special appearance by Pope Francis.

The pontiff is slated to deliver an address to leaders about the promises and perils of artificial intelligence. 

He is also expected to renew his appeal for a peaceful end to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. 

STF consults with members on arbitration as a path forward

In a recent release, the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation says they're currently engaged in a member consultation process regarding the use of binding arbitration to reach a new provincial collective bargaining agreement.

The consultation with teachers is focusing on two possible paths forward, one of which involves the use of binding arbitration to resolve two outstanding issues: class complexity-accountability framework and teachers’ wages.

Additional information will not be available while the member consultation process takes place.

Virtual physician program extended to Lanigan

Residents in Lanigan and area will have improved access to emergency care. 

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) announced that it is extending the virtual physician program to the emergency department (ED) at the Lanigan Hospital. Through this initiative, residents of Lanigan and the area will benefit from having enhanced access to ED services and continue to receive safe, high-quality, patient-centred care as close to home as possible.
