Local talent fuels Saskatoon Berries hot start

Through the first week of the 2025 Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) season, the Saskatoon Berries are showing no signs of a sophomore jinx.  

After dropping their first contest of the season, the Berries have won their last five games and are a half of a game back of the Medicine Hat Mavericks for first place in the Eastern Division.  

Three local players have made some early season contributions to the Berries success.  

Astros squeak past East Central 15U AAA Dodgers 8-7

The 15U AAA East Central Dodgers came up short against the Saskatoon Astros on Wednesday night, losing 8-7 in Muenster.  

First baseman Everitt Solar had a big night at the plate for the Dodgers as he had two hits, including a home run and drove in four runs.  

Catcher Sawyer Pollon had three hits and scored two runs.  

Batoche Festival Grounds welcoming northern wildfire evacuees

The Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) government announced today that they would be opening the Batoche Festival Grounds to the northern wildfire evacuees seeking a secure place to wait out the current situation. 

Evacuees should contact the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency at 855-559-5502 to register their destination. To register for Batoche call 1-877-MétisSK (ext. 9). 

Watson Streetfest proudly presents The Barrelmen

The Barrelmen, a Saskatoon based quartet of country roots musicians who are pushing the boundaries of a new sound, will hit the stage at this year’s Watson Streetfest on Friday, June 20.  

The talented members of this country outfit have been together for several years and have evolved their sound and stage presentation that would bring envious glances to seasoned Nashville players.

The 572 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) of Humboldt, Saskatchewan, recently held their Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR), marking the culmination of a year filled with training, community service, and personal development. The event showcased the cadets' accomplishments and the program's impact on youth in the area.

We could be in for a long, hot, dry summer

The Weather Network's Summer Forecast is calling for above-normal temperatures for the Prairies.

The southern half of the provinces will experience well-above-normal temperatures due to a heat dome in the U.S.

A heat dome occurs when a high-pressure system traps hot air over a region, causing prolonged periods of extreme heat. 

Meteorologist Rhythm Reet says this means we could see excessive heat for a longer period and more frequent heat waves; it also influences where the storm track will be setting up.

The annual 111 Kilometre Challenge, spearheaded by Celest Leray-Leicht, is back for another year, encouraging participants of all ages and abilities to move their bodies in support of heart health, connection, and youth wellness through the Northern Lights Movement for Kids. The challenge honours the legacy of Celest and Kurt Leicht’s son, former Bronco Jacob Leicht.  

Historian Bill Waiser elaborates on how We Are All Treaty People

Noted Canadian author and lecturer Bill Waiser addressed a full house at the Humboldt and District Gallery on Wednesday night during a lecture entitled we are all treaty people. Drawing on years of research and his own writings, wiser took the audience through a chronology of early contact with European plain settlers, the Hudson Bay company, and indigenous peoples of the area.
