Smoke returns to Humboldt area borne by north west winds
With a shift to northwesterly winds, much of Saskatchewan is under an Air Quality Advisory this morning.
“With those winds have come a shifting of the smoke plumes from the wildfires in the northern Prairies,” explained Brad Vrolijk, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.
“That’s sort of fumigating southern Saskatchewan with a lot of smoke that’s been trapped up north over the last week or so.”
Artists share impressions and impact of prairie elevators
When the last grain elevator in Meacham came tumbling down in 2021, Meacham based artists Bonnie Gilmore and Charlie Farrero took that emotional experience and channeled it into creative works of clay that found their way into an exhibition. “The Meacham Elevator” is on now at the Humboldt and District Gallery, and on Wednesday evening, August 14th, the two artists shared their passion for the prairie sentinel and talked about the exploration of the experience through their art.

The World Health Organization's declaration of mpox as a global public health emergency means Canada must do its part to help stem outbreaks of the virus in Africa, experts say.
"Where there is a fire, we all put it out quickly and the whole village is safe. If you allow one house to burn in a village, sooner or later that fire is coming for you," said Dr. Madhukar Pai, Canada Research Chair in epidemiology and global health at McGill University in Montreal.
CARE Project Hosts Second Annual Golf Tournament to Support Youth Conflict Resolution
Brenda Shrader, the dedicated organizer and founder of the CARE Project, is gearing up for the second annual CARE Golf Tournament, set to take place on August 24th. This event, a nine-hole, two-person scramble, serves as a fundraiser to support the CARE Project, an initiative aimed at helping youth navigate conflict and resolve issues outside the traditional court system.

Former Conservative MP, cabinet minister Chuck Strahl dies at 67
Former Conservative MP and cabinet minister Chuck Strahl has died at the age of 67.
Strahl was first elected in 1993 and represented the B.C. riding of Chilliwack–Fraser Canyon until his retirement in 2011.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre called Strahl a "dear friend" in a social media post Wednesday.
"Chuck's unwavering commitment to our movement and his deep love for Canada were part of everything he did," Poilievre said.
"He was a man of principle, integrity and compassion, and a foundational member of our Conservative party."
Farmers asked to keep an eye out for verticillium stripe this year
With farmers getting close to harvest they're taking an extra look at any diseases that could pop up this year, including verticillium stripe.
While more common in eastern portions of Manitoba, samples have been seen in fields all the west to Alberta.
The disease is a relative newcomer, with agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada Breanna Miller explaining its impact.
